On the symposium stage, Professor Takahashi quietly began to speak. "The rapid development of artificial intelligence is progressing at a pace that threatens to fundamentally overturn our social structure, even more so than the industrial revolutions of the past."
それに対し、倫理学を専門とする森本氏が反論します。「確かに技術の進歩は目覚ましいですが、それに伴う倫理的な課題を顧みずして、真の社会貢献とは言えないのではないでしょうか。自律型AIが引き起こした事故の責任の所在など、議論すべき問題は山積しています。」
In response, Mr. Morimoto, an ethics specialist, argued back. "While the progress of technology is certainly remarkable, can it really be called a true contribution to society without considering the accompanying ethical challenges? There are a mountain of issues to discuss, such as where the responsibility lies for accidents caused by autonomous AI."
高橋教授は深く頷きながら答えました。「おっしゃる通りです。しかし、リスクを恐れるがあまり技術の歩みを止めてしまえば、それこそ人類の敗北にほかなりません。未知の領域を開拓せんがための挑戦こそが、これまでの我々を支えてきたのですから。」
Professor Takahashi replied with a deep nod. "You are quite right. However, if we stop the progress of technology simply because we fear the risks, that would be nothing short of a defeat for humanity. After all, it is the challenge of seeking to pioneer unknown territories that has sustained us until now."
「とはいえ、人間の尊厳に関わる問題をもシリコンチップの判断に委ねるのには無理があります。」と森本氏は語気を強めました。「究極の選択を機械に強いることは、我々が人間としての道徳的責任を放棄したも同然ですから。」
"Even so, it is unreasonable to entrust matters concerning human dignity to the judgment of silicon chips." Mr. Morimoto said with increased intensity. "Forcing ultimate choices upon machines is the same as us abandoning our moral responsibility as human beings."
会場は、二人の白熱した議論を息を飲んで見守っていました。AIという新たな知性を前にして、人間はいかに自らの存在意義を見出すべきなのか、その答えはまだ誰も持ち合わせていませんでした。
The audience watched the heated debate between the two with bated breath. Faced with this new intelligence called AI, how should humans find their own sense of purpose? No one yet had the answer.
