Terms of Service

To use our Services, you must: • Be at least 13 years of age, or the minimum age of digital consent in your jurisdiction (e.g., 16 in the EEA under GDPR) • Have the legal capacity to enter into a binding agreement • Not be prohibited from using the Services under applicable law • Not have been previously banned or removed from the Services If you are under the age of 18, you represent that you have obtained the consent of a parent or legal guardian to use our Services and that they have read and agree to these Terms on your behalf. By using the Services, you represent and warrant that you meet all eligibility requirements. If you do not meet these requirements, you must not access or use the Services.

Certain features of our Services, including saving words to notebooks, spaced repetition reviews, and progress tracking, require you to create an account. Account Creation You may register using an email address and password, or through Google OAuth. When registering, you agree to: • Provide accurate, current, and complete information • Maintain and promptly update your account information • Keep your password secure and confidential • Not share your account credentials with any third party • Notify us immediately of any unauthorized use of your account Account Responsibility You are solely responsible for all activity that occurs under your account, whether or not authorized by you. We are not liable for any loss or damage arising from your failure to maintain the security of your account credentials. Account Linking If you link a Google account to your 2hongo account, you may unlink it at any time through your Profile settings, provided you have an alternative sign-in method (email and password) configured. We reserve the right to suspend or terminate any account that we reasonably believe violates these Terms, is used fraudulently, or has been inactive for an extended period, with reasonable notice where practicable.

2hongo provides a Japanese language learning platform that includes the following features: • Word Database: Access to 214,000+ Japanese word entries with readings, meanings, example sentences, word relationships, pitch accent, and audio pronunciations • AI Meaning Search: Semantic search that finds Japanese words by meaning across English, Chinese, and Japanese • Spaced Repetition System (SRS): Personalized review using the SM-2 algorithm across saved vocabulary, kana, kanji, and grammar, with swipeable flashcards and progress tracking • Personal Notebooks: Create and organize vocabulary collections with custom notebooks, tags, notes, and mastery levels • Grammar Reference: A searchable grammar reference organized by JLPT level, with formation rules, examples, and explanations • Japanese Basics: Structured learning pages covering writing systems, pronunciation, conjugation, essential vocabulary, and reference tables • Reading Articles: JLPT-leveled reading content with interactive text, audio narration, and comprehension checks • Stroke Order and Practice: Animated stroke order display and interactive drawing practice for hiragana, katakana, and kanji • Language Tools: Text parser, full-width/half-width converter, kana converter, and Japanese era converter • Curated Vocabulary Lists: Thematic word collections with filtering and sorting capabilities Service Availability While we strive to maintain continuous availability of our Services, we do not guarantee uninterrupted or error-free access. We may modify, suspend, or discontinue any part of the Services at any time, with or without notice. We will make reasonable efforts to provide advance notice of significant changes that affect your use of the Services. Free and Paid Services 2hongo offers free functionality and optional paid plans (Standard, Plus, and Max), offered as monthly subscriptions and, in some regions, as one-time access. Free and paid features may change over time; current entitlements and prices are shown before purchase. We may introduce advertisements in the future. Material changes to pricing or feature availability will be communicated as required by applicable law and app store policy.

Our Content All content provided through the Services — including but not limited to word database entries, example sentences, grammar explanations, learning materials, stroke order data, user interface designs, logos, and trademarks (collectively, "Our Content") — is owned by or licensed to 2hongo and is protected by copyright, trademark, and other intellectual property laws. Our word database is built upon the JMdict/EDICT open-source dictionary project and enriched with AI-generated examples and additional data. The underlying JMdict data is used in accordance with its Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License. All enhancements, original content, and the platform itself remain the intellectual property of 2hongo. You are granted a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable license to access and use Our Content solely for personal, non-commercial Japanese language learning purposes. You may not: • Copy, reproduce, distribute, or publicly display Our Content beyond what is necessary for personal study • Create derivative works based on Our Content for commercial purposes • Use automated tools, scrapers, or bots to extract data from the Services • Remove or alter any copyright, trademark, or other proprietary notices Your Content Content you create within the Services — such as notebook names, personal notes, tags, and custom organization — remains yours. By using the Services, you grant us a limited license to store, process, and display your content solely for the purpose of providing the Services to you. Third-Party Content Our Services may display content from third-party sources, including advertisements that may be served through Google AdSense in the future. We are not responsible for the accuracy, completeness, or legality of third-party content. Your interaction with third-party advertisements and services is governed by those third parties' terms and policies.

You agree to use our Services only for lawful purposes and in accordance with these Terms. When using our Services, you must not: Abusive Behavior • Harass, threaten, impersonate, or intimidate other users • Submit false, misleading, or fraudulent information • Create multiple accounts for deceptive or abusive purposes • Use offensive, obscene, or inappropriate usernames or display names Technical Misuse • Attempt to gain unauthorized access to our systems, servers, or other users' accounts • Introduce malware, viruses, or any harmful code • Interfere with or disrupt the integrity or performance of the Services • Circumvent, disable, or interfere with security features • Use automated means (bots, scrapers, crawlers) to access or collect data from the Services without our written permission • Reverse engineer, decompile, or disassemble any part of the Services Content Misuse • Systematically download, copy, or redistribute Our Content • Use the Services to build a competing product or service • Resell, sublicense, or commercially exploit any aspect of the Services • Use the Services for any commercial purpose not expressly authorized by us Violation of these acceptable use terms may result in immediate suspension or termination of your account.

We may display advertisements through Google AdSense to support the free availability of the platform. We do not currently show ads. If and when advertising is introduced, you acknowledge and agree that: • Advertisements may appear on word detail pages, grammar pages, and browsing pages throughout the Services • We will not display advertisements during vocabulary review sessions, to preserve the learning experience • Ad content is provided by third-party advertising networks and does not constitute our endorsement • You will not use ad-blocking tools in a manner that interferes with the proper functioning of the Services • Ad personalization is managed by Google and subject to Google's privacy policy and ad settings We make reasonable efforts to ensure that advertisements are non-intrusive and do not significantly detract from the learning experience.

Your privacy is important to us. Our collection, use, and protection of your personal information is governed by our Privacy Policy, which is incorporated into these Terms by reference. By using our Services, you consent to the collection and use of your information as described in our Privacy Policy. Key points include: • We collect account information, learning data, and usage data necessary to provide our Services • Your learning data (saved words, notebooks, review history, notes, tags) is stored securely and accessible only to you • We do not sell your personal information to third parties • You may delete your account and all associated data at any time through your Profile settings • We comply with applicable data protection laws, including GDPR, CCPA, and other regional regulations Please review our Privacy Policy for complete details about our data practices.

Educational Content Our Services are designed as a supplementary tool for Japanese language learning. While we strive to ensure accuracy, we do not guarantee that all content — including word definitions, example sentences, grammar explanations, and AI-generated content — is error-free. Our Services should not be considered a substitute for professional language instruction, accredited courses, or certified textbooks. AI-Generated Content Certain content in our Services, including example sentences and word relationships, is generated using artificial intelligence. While we review and curate this content for quality, AI-generated content may occasionally contain errors or inaccuracies. We encourage users to cross-reference important information with authoritative sources. Service Availability THE SERVICES ARE PROVIDED ON AN "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE" BASIS WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, EITHER EXPRESS OR IMPLIED. TO THE FULLEST EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAW, WE DISCLAIM ALL WARRANTIES, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, NON-INFRINGEMENT, AND ACCURACY. We do not warrant that: • The Services will be uninterrupted, timely, secure, or error-free • The results obtained from the Services will be accurate or reliable • Any errors in the Services will be corrected • The Services will meet your specific learning objectives or expectations

TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAW, IN NO EVENT SHALL 2HONGO, ITS OPERATORS, AFFILIATES, OR LICENSORS BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO: • Loss of data, learning progress, or saved content • Loss of profits, revenue, or anticipated savings • Loss of use or inability to access the Services • Any unauthorized access to or alteration of your transmissions or data • Any errors, inaccuracies, or omissions in the content • Personal injury or property damage related to your use of the Services OUR TOTAL AGGREGATE LIABILITY ARISING OUT OF OR RELATING TO THESE TERMS OR YOUR USE OF THE SERVICES SHALL NOT EXCEED THE GREATER OF (A) THE AMOUNT YOU HAVE PAID US IN THE TWELVE (12) MONTHS PRECEDING THE CLAIM, OR (B) ONE HUNDRED US DOLLARS ($100). Some jurisdictions do not allow the exclusion or limitation of certain damages. In such jurisdictions, our liability shall be limited to the maximum extent permitted by law. Nothing in these Terms excludes or limits liability that cannot be excluded or limited under applicable law.

You agree to indemnify, defend, and hold harmless 2hongo and its operators, affiliates, licensors, and their respective officers, directors, employees, and agents from and against any claims, liabilities, damages, losses, costs, and expenses (including reasonable attorneys' fees) arising out of or relating to: • Your use of or access to the Services • Your violation of these Terms • Your violation of any third-party rights, including intellectual property rights • Your violation of any applicable law or regulation • Any content you submit, post, or transmit through the Services This indemnification obligation shall survive the termination of these Terms and your use of the Services.

By You You may terminate your account at any time by deleting it through your Profile > Security settings. Upon deletion, all your personal data, learning progress, notebooks, saved words, and review history will be permanently removed from our systems within 30 days. By Us We reserve the right to suspend or terminate your access to the Services at any time, with or without cause, and with or without notice, including but not limited to cases where: • You breach any provision of these Terms • Your conduct negatively impacts the Services or other users • We are required to do so by law • We discontinue the Services or any part thereof Where practicable and not prohibited by law, we will provide reasonable notice before termination and an opportunity to export your data. Effect of Termination Upon termination, your right to use the Services ceases immediately. Provisions of these Terms that by their nature should survive termination shall remain in effect, including but not limited to: intellectual property rights, disclaimers, limitation of liability, indemnification, and dispute resolution.

Our Services may contain links to or integrations with third-party websites, services, or content that are not owned or controlled by 2hongo. These include but are not limited to: • Google OAuth for account authentication • Google AdSense for advertising • External dictionary and reference resources We have no control over, and assume no responsibility for, the content, privacy policies, or practices of any third-party websites or services. You acknowledge and agree that we are not responsible or liable for any damage or loss caused by or in connection with the use of any third-party services. We encourage you to review the terms and privacy policies of any third-party services you interact with through our platform.

These Terms shall be governed by and construed in accordance with applicable law, without regard to conflict of law principles. Informal Resolution Before initiating any formal dispute proceeding, you agree to first contact us through our contact form to attempt to resolve the dispute informally. We will make good-faith efforts to resolve any dispute within 30 days of receiving your notice. Formal Proceedings If a dispute cannot be resolved informally, you agree that any legal action or proceeding arising under these Terms shall be brought exclusively in the courts of competent jurisdiction, and you consent to the personal jurisdiction of such courts. Class Action Waiver To the extent permitted by applicable law, you agree that any dispute resolution proceedings will be conducted only on an individual basis and not in a class, consolidated, or representative action. Exceptions Nothing in this section shall prevent either party from seeking injunctive or other equitable relief in any court of competent jurisdiction for the protection of intellectual property rights.

We reserve the right to modify these Terms at any time. When we make material changes: • We will update the "Last Updated" date at the top of this page • For significant changes, we may notify you by email or by posting a prominent notice on our Services • We will provide at least 30 days' notice before material changes take effect, where practicable Your continued use of the Services after the effective date of revised Terms constitutes your acceptance of the changes. If you do not agree with the revised Terms, you must stop using the Services and may delete your account. We encourage you to review these Terms periodically to stay informed about the terms governing your use of our Services. Previous versions of these Terms are available upon request.

Entire Agreement These Terms, together with our Privacy Policy, constitute the entire agreement between you and 2hongo regarding your use of the Services and supersede all prior agreements, understandings, and communications. Severability If any provision of these Terms is found to be invalid, illegal, or unenforceable by a court of competent jurisdiction, the remaining provisions shall continue in full force and effect. The invalid provision shall be modified to the minimum extent necessary to make it valid and enforceable. Waiver Our failure to enforce any right or provision of these Terms shall not constitute a waiver of that right or provision. Any waiver must be in writing and signed by an authorized representative of 2hongo. Assignment You may not assign or transfer your rights or obligations under these Terms without our prior written consent. We may assign our rights and obligations under these Terms without restriction. Force Majeure We shall not be liable for any delay or failure to perform our obligations under these Terms due to circumstances beyond our reasonable control, including but not limited to natural disasters, acts of government, power failures, internet disruptions, or pandemic-related events. Language These Terms are drafted in English. Translations are provided for convenience only. In case of any conflict between the English version and a translated version, the English version shall prevail.

2hongo offers optional paid subscriptions (Standard, Plus, and Max), billed monthly. The features and price of each plan are shown at the point of purchase. Subscriptions purchased under earlier plan names (Premium and Pro) continue until they end or are canceled, and we will notify affected subscribers before such a plan is discontinued. Auto-renewal: Paid subscriptions automatically renew at the end of each billing period at the then-current price unless you cancel before the renewal date. Renewal terms and pricing are disclosed at the time of purchase, and we provide advance notice of any price change as required by applicable law and the relevant app store. Free trial: A 7-day free trial may be offered on any plan, limited to one trial per account. Unless you cancel before the trial ends, it automatically converts to a paid subscription and your payment method is charged. Cancellation and management: You can cancel at any time, and access continues until the end of the current billing period. Where you manage or cancel depends on where you subscribed: • Web subscriptions (via Stripe) are managed through the billing portal in your account settings. • iOS subscriptions are managed in your Apple ID settings (Settings → Subscriptions); Android subscriptions are managed in Google Play. Refunds: For purchases made through the Apple App Store or Google Play, refunds are handled by Apple or Google under their respective policies. For web purchases made through Stripe, our own refund policy applies. Cross-platform access: Your subscription is tied to your account. A subscription purchased on any platform unlocks paid features on both the web and the mobile apps.

In some regions, Standard, Plus, and Max are also offered as one-time access: a single payment on the web, through Stripe, using Alipay or WeChat Pay, for one or three calendar months of access. The plan, term, price, and end date are shown before you pay. No automatic renewal: One-time access is charged once and never renews. It is not a subscription, so there is nothing to cancel and it is not managed through the billing portal. When it ends, your account returns to the free plan and your learning data is kept. One-time access has no free trial, and your first one-time purchase uses up the free trial your account would otherwise be offered. Start of access: Access begins once the payment provider confirms your payment, which can take a short time after you complete checkout. Buying more: While your access is active, buying the same plan again adds the new term after your current end date. A purchase cannot take your end date more than twelve months past the date of purchase. Upgrading: While your access is active, you may buy a higher plan at its full price. The higher plan starts as soon as the payment is confirmed, and the time left on your current plan carries over as extra days of the higher plan, converted at the ratio of the two plans' one-month prices. For example, if the lower plan's one-month price is 60% of the higher plan's, 30 remaining days become 18 days. The carried-over days and the new end date are shown before you pay. A lower plan cannot be bought until your current access ends. Other access: One-time access cannot be bought while your account has an active subscription or free trial from any platform. If a one-time payment completes after your account has gained access another way — for example, a subscription bought in the mobile app while checkout was still open — the payment grants no access and we refund it in full. Refunds: Due to the nature of digital content, we generally do not refund one-time access after purchase. This does not limit any rights you have under applicable law. When we refund a purchase in full, the access it provided ends immediately, including any part already used, and your access is recalculated from your remaining purchases: • Refunding an upgrade returns you to your previous plan until the end date it had before the upgrade. • Refunding an earlier purchase shortens or removes the extra days it carried over into a later upgrade. • If no remaining purchase covers the present, access ends at once. Refunds are returned to the original Alipay or WeChat Pay account. The payment methods only allow refunds within 90 days of payment for Alipay and 180 days for WeChat Pay.
