昔々、ある小さな村に、とても可愛い女の子がいました。おばあさんが赤いずきんを作ってくれたので、女の子はそれをいつもかぶっていました。村の人はみんな、その女の子を赤ずきんと呼びました。
Long, long ago, there lived a very sweet little girl in a small village. Her grandmother had made her a red hood, and the girl wore it all the time. Everyone in the village called her Little Red Riding Hood.
ある朝、お母さんが赤ずきんに言いました。「おばあさんが病気だから、このケーキとぶどう酒を持っていってください。森の中で寄り道をしてはいけませんよ。それから、知らない人と話さないでね。」赤ずきんは「はい、分かりました」と答えて、すぐに家を出ました。
One morning, her mother said to her, "Grandmother is sick, so please take her this cake and bottle of wine. Don't take any detours in the forest. And don't talk to strangers." Little Red Riding Hood answered, "Yes, I understand," and left the house right away.
森の中を歩きながら、赤ずきんはきれいな花をたくさん見つけました。歌を歌ったり、鳥の声を聞いたりしながら、ゆっくり歩きました。その時、後ろから大きな声が聞こえました。それは悪い狼でした。「こんにちは、赤ずきん。一人でどこへ行くの？」と狼が聞きました。
As she walked through the forest, Little Red Riding Hood spotted many pretty flowers. She walked slowly, singing songs and listening to the birds. Just then, she heard a loud voice behind her. It was a wicked wolf. "Hello, Little Red Riding Hood. Where are you going all by yourself?" the wolf asked.
「おばあさんの家へお見舞いに行きます。おばあさんは病気だから、ケーキを持っていくの」と赤ずきんが答えました。狼は「それは大変だね。花もたくさん持っていったほうがいいよ」と優しい声で言いました。赤ずきんが花を集めている時、狼は先におばあさんの家へ走って行きました。
"I'm going to my grandmother's house to visit her. She's sick, so I'm bringing her some cake," Little Red Riding Hood answered. The wolf said in a gentle voice, "Oh, that's too bad. You should bring her lots of flowers too." While Little Red Riding Hood was gathering flowers, the wolf ran ahead to her grandmother's house.
おばあさんの家に着いた狼は、ドアを開けて、おばあさんを丸ごと食べてしまいました。それから、おばあさんの服を着て、頭にずきんをかぶって、ベッドの中に入りました。狼はお腹がすいていましたが、赤ずきんも食べたいと思いました。
When the wolf reached the house, he opened the door and swallowed the grandmother whole. Then he put on her clothes, pulled her hood over his head, and climbed into the bed. The wolf was already full, but he still wanted to eat Little Red Riding Hood too.
赤ずきんが家に着いて、ベッドのそばへ行きました。「おばあさん、目がいつもより大きいですね」と赤ずきんが言いました。「お前をよく見るためだよ。」「耳も大きいですね。」「お前の声をよく聞くためだよ。」「でも、口はどうしてそんなに大きいの？」
When Little Red Riding Hood arrived, she walked over to the bed. "Grandmother, your eyes are bigger than usual," she said. "That's so I can see you better." "Your ears are big too." "That's so I can hear you better." "But why is your mouth so big?"
「それは、お前を食べるためだよ！」と狼は大きな声で言って、赤ずきんを丸飲みにしました。お腹が一杯になった狼は、ベッドの上で大きないびきをかいて寝てしまいました。
"It's so I can eat you!" the wolf shouted, and he swallowed Little Red Riding Hood whole. With his belly full, the wolf fell into a deep sleep on the bed, snoring loudly.
その時、近くを通った猟師が、変ないびきを聞きました。「これは狼の声だ」と思った猟師は、家の中に入って狼を見つけました。猟師がそっと狼のお腹を切ると、中からおばあさんと赤ずきんが元気に出てきました。みんなで一緒に、おばあさんが元気になったことをお祝いしました。
Just then, a hunter passing nearby heard the strange snoring. "That sounds like a wolf," he thought, and he went inside. He found the wolf and carefully cut open its belly, and out came the grandmother and Little Red Riding Hood, both safe and sound. Everyone celebrated together that the grandmother was well again.
