毎年一月の第二月曜日は「成人の日」です。この日は、二十歳になった若者の成長を祝うために、全国で式典が行われます。
The second Monday of January each year is Coming of Age Day. On this day, ceremonies are held nationwide to celebrate young people who have turned twenty.
成人式では、女性は振袖という華やかな着物を着ることが多いです。男性はスーツを着る人がほとんどですが、袴を選ぶ人もいます。久しぶりに会った友達と一緒に写真を撮るのも、この日の楽しみの一つです。
At the ceremony, women often wear furisode, a gorgeous type of kimono. Most men wear suits, though some choose hakama. Taking photos with friends you have not seen in a while is also one of the pleasures of the day.
振袖は値段が高いため、レンタルする人も少なくありません。半年以上前から予約しないと、好きなデザインが選べないこともあります。美容院の予約も早い者勝ちに決まっているので、朝早くから準備を始める人もいます。
Because furisode are expensive, many people rent them. If you do not reserve more than half a year ahead, you may not get your preferred design. Salon appointments are first come, first served as well, so some people start getting ready early in the morning.
式典では、市長や来賓の話を聞いたり、昔の恩師に挨拶をしたりします。ただ、最近の成人式では、騒いでしまう若者がニュースになることもあり、問題になっています。
At the ceremony, attendees listen to speeches by the mayor and guests, or greet former teachers. Recently, however, young people who cause disturbances at Coming of Age ceremonies sometimes make the news, and this has become an issue.
二〇二二年から、成人年齢が十八歳に引き下げられました。しかし、成人式自体は二十歳で行う自治体がほとんどです。名前も「二十歳のつどい」に変わった地域もあるとのことです。
From 2022, the age of adulthood was lowered to eighteen. Even so, most local governments still hold the coming-of-age ceremony at twenty. Some regions have reportedly changed the name to something like “gathering for twenty-year-olds.”
成人の日は、大人になったことを自覚するきっかけになります。家族への感謝を改めて感じるとともに、これからの人生について考える大切な日です。
Coming of Age Day is an occasion to become aware that you are an adult. It is an important day to feel gratitude toward family anew and to think about the life ahead.
