The defeat in World War II inflicted unprecedented destruction on Japan. Most of the major cities had been incinerated by air raids, and Tokyo and Osaka were burnt-out plains as far as the eye could see. The people groaned under hunger and a desperate housing shortage, and the country's industrial base lay in ruins. And yet the recovery Japan made from this hopeless starting point can only be called a miracle without parallel in world history.
The path of recovery began with the series of reforms imposed under the American occupation. The dissolution of the zaibatsu, agricultural land reform, the new trade union law — these measures overturned the prewar economic structure at its roots and laid the social foundation that would make high-speed growth possible. Ironically, the worst possible disaster — defeat in war — ended up driving the modernization of Japanese society forward in a single stroke.
The turning point was the outbreak of the Korean War in 1950. Special procurements for the U.S. military breathed sudden life into industries such as textiles and steel, triggering what came to be called the "special procurement boom." From the vantage point of later generations, it is impossible not to feel a certain unease at the fact that Japan's reconstruction was, in part, propelled by another country's tragedy.
From 1955 right up to 1973, Japan posted average annual growth of well over ten percent year after year. During this period of high-speed growth, the standard of living rose dramatically. Television, washing machine, and refrigerator — the so-called "three sacred treasures" — spread through ordinary households, soon to be followed by the "three Cs": color television, cooler, and car, each in turn working its way into the daily life of every home.
Behind this rapid industrialization, the success owed everything to a diligent workforce. Japanese-style management, anchored in lifetime employment and seniority-based promotion, gave workers a sense of stability while also demanding devotion to the company as a matter of course. It was an age in which going home after only a modest amount of overtime was simply unthinkable; the long working hours symbolized by the phrases "corporate warrior" and "fierce employee" were the hidden cost of growth.
Economic growth transformed the very face of the country. With the opening of the Tokaido Shinkansen and the build-out of the expressway network, the Japanese archipelago was tied together by a single artery, and the movement of people and goods accelerated dramatically. Hosting the 1964 Tokyo Olympics gave the nation immeasurable confidence as a symbol of postwar recovery and provided an ideal stage on which to show a reborn Japan to the world.
