Today's guest is a renowned authority in the field of regenerative medicine. Doctor, could you begin by explaining, in a single sentence, what is so innovative about the new gene therapy that has just been announced?
従来の治療では、症状を抑えることはできても、病の根本原因に手を加えることは困難でした。今回の手法は、患者ご自身の細胞を編集して体内に戻すという発想に基づいており、難病の根治に道を開く可能性を秘めております。
Conventional treatments could suppress symptoms, but reaching the root cause of an illness was difficult. The new approach is built on the idea of editing the patient's own cells and returning them to the body, and it holds within it the potential to open a path toward curing diseases that have until now been intractable.
具体的に、どのような疾患への応用が期待されているのでしょうか。
Specifically, what kinds of conditions are seen as candidates for its application?
当初は、特定の遺伝子変異に起因する希少疾患を対象に進めてまいりました。しかし、ここ数年の研究を踏まえれば、糖尿病や一部のがんといった、より広範な疾患への応用も視野に入ってきたと申し上げてよいかと存じます。
At the outset, we have moved forward with rare diseases caused by specific genetic mutations as our target. However, based on the research of the past few years, I think it is fair to say that broader applications — to diabetes and to certain cancers — are now coming within view.
とはいえ、一部の専門家からは、遺伝子を操作することそのものへの倫理的懸念や、未知の副作用への危惧も根強く残っていると伺います。これらの声にはどう向き合っておられますか。
That said, some specialists tell us that deep-rooted ethical concerns over gene manipulation itself, and fears of unknown side effects, still remain. How are you engaging with these voices?
ご指摘の点は、決して軽んじてはなりません。新たな技術の導入には常にリスクが伴い、そこへの配慮を怠れば、それは医学の敗北にほかならないと、私自身肝に銘じております。
The points you raise must on no account be taken lightly. The introduction of any new technology carries risk, and to neglect attention to that risk would be nothing short of a defeat for medicine itself — that is something I keep firmly in my own mind.
安全性の検証は、具体的にどのような手順で進めておられるのでしょうか。
And concretely, by what procedures is the safety verification being carried out?
初期の臨床試験を皮切りに、十年単位の長期追跡調査までを一貫した体制で実施しております。さらに、国内外の独立した倫理委員会の審査を経なくしては、いかなる新規プロトコルも一切実施いたしません。
Starting with our initial clinical trials, we have set up an integrated framework that extends all the way through to follow-up studies measured in decades. Moreover, no new protocol is implemented at all without first passing review by independent ethics committees both at home and abroad.
治療を希望されている患者さんやそのご家族に対して、現時点で何かメッセージはございますか。
Is there any message you would like to give, at this point, to patients hoping for the treatment and to their families?
まず申し上げたいのは、過度な期待もまた、患者の方々を傷つけかねないということです。希望はけっして失わないでいただきたい。同時に、目の前の症状に応じた既存の治療を継続することの大切さも、どうかご理解いただきたく存じます。
The first thing I want to say is that excessive expectations, too, can hurt patients. Please do not let go of hope. At the same time, please understand the importance of continuing existing treatments suited to the symptoms in front of you.
政策面で、行政や立法府に望まれることはございますか。
On the policy side, is there anything you would wish for from government and the legislature?
研究費の安定的確保はもとより、規制当局と研究者との対話の場を、もっと開かれたかたちで設けていただきたいと願ってやみません。技術の進歩と倫理のバランスをいかに取るか ── それこそが、社会全体に問われている課題なのです。本日はお招きいただきまして、誠にありがとうございました。
Beyond the stable funding of research, I sincerely wish that more open forums for dialogue between regulators and researchers would be put in place. How to balance technological progress with ethics — that, indeed, is the question being put to society as a whole. Thank you very much for having me on the program today.
