1The attributive form of the classical negative auxiliary ず, attached to a verb's 未然形 stem to mean "not…". Not productive in modern Japanese, but survives in written language and fixed expressions such as 言わざるを得ない (have no choice but to say), 見ざる聞かざる言わざる (see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil), and やむを得ざる (unavoidable).
