A suffix attached to nouns to form na-adjectives meaning 'related to ~', 'characterized by ~', or 'of a ~ nature'. One of the most productive word-forming elements in modern Japanese, yielding hundreds of common adjectives — 経済的 (economic), 論理的 (logical), 一般的 (general), 具体的 (concrete), 社会的 (social), 政治的 (political), 効果的 (effective) — used everywhere from academia to journalism to business. Functionally close to English -ical/-ive/-al/-ic.

A looser, more colloquial use where 〜的 means 'resembling ~' or 'having the feel of ~'. Often coined ad-hoc with a playful tone — 子供的 (childlike), アニメ的 (anime-ish), 昭和的 (Shōwa-era-ish). Less formal than sense 1; these coinages may not appear in dictionaries.

A conversational device popular among younger speakers — 〜的な or 〜的なこと is used to paraphrase, summarize, or quote a statement loosely, much like English 'something like ...' or 'along the lines of ...'. Has a softening, distancing effect (「『忙しい』的なことを言ってた」 ≈ 'he said something along the lines of being busy'). Very common in casual speech and on social media, but out of place in formal writing.

Attached to a noun to form an adverbial expression meaning 'in terms of ~', 'from the standpoint of ~', or '~ -wise' — 経済的に (financially), 時間的に (timewise), 個人的には (personally), 将来的には (in the long run). A workhorse expression for framing or qualifying a statement, common in both speech and writing.

A dated, slangy form of address — attaching 的 to a name or title to convey either familiarity or mild mockery (太郎的, 部長的). Found in early-20th-century novels and old schoolboy slang; essentially extinct in modern Japanese, where it would now register as parody or self-conscious affectation.
