むかしむかし、ある遠い国に、アラジンという貧しい少年が住んでいました。父を早くに亡くし、母と二人で苦しい暮らしを続けていたのです。
Long ago, in a faraway country, there lived a poor boy named Aladdin. He had lost his father at a young age and was struggling to make ends meet with his mother.
ある日、見知らぬ男が訪ねてきて、「わたしはお前の伯父だ」と名乗りました。立派な服を着たその男は、アラジンを商売の旅へ連れて行くと言い、母は喜んで息子を送り出しました。
One day, a stranger came calling and announced, "I am your uncle." Dressed in fine clothes, the man said he would take Aladdin along on a trading journey, and his mother gladly sent her son off.
しかし、男の本当の目的は、砂漠の奥にある魔法の洞窟から、古いランプを手に入れることだったのです。男はアラジンに魔法の指輪を渡し、「洞窟の宝に触れずに、ランプだけを持って帰ってこい」と命じました。
The man's true aim, however, was to get hold of an old lamp from a magical cave deep in the desert. He handed Aladdin a magic ring and ordered, "Bring back only the lamp, without touching any of the cave's treasures."
アラジンが洞窟に入ると、金や宝石が山のように光っていました。約束を守ってランプだけを取り、戻ろうとしたとたん、男は怒り出し、入り口の岩を閉じてしまいました。指輪さえあればアラジンはもう必要ないと考えたわけです。
When Aladdin went inside, gold and jewels glittered in heaps all around him. The moment he picked up only the lamp and turned to leave, the man flew into a rage and sealed the entrance with a great stone. Apparently he had decided that as long as he had the ring, Aladdin was no longer needed.
真っ暗な洞窟の中で、アラジンは思わず指輪をこすりました。すると巨大な魔神が現れ、「ご主人様、何でもお望みのままに」と低い声で言いました。アラジンはその魔神のおかげで、無事に家へ帰ることができました。
In the pitch-dark cave, Aladdin absently rubbed the ring. A huge genie appeared and said in a deep voice, "Master, your wish is my command." Thanks to that genie, Aladdin made it safely home.
母が古いランプを磨いていると、今度はもっと大きな魔神が現れ、「このランプの持ち主に従います」と言いました。その日から、貧しかった親子の暮らしはすっかり変わったのです。
When his mother polished the old lamp, an even greater genie appeared and said, "I obey whoever owns this lamp." From that day on, the life of the poor mother and son was utterly transformed.
アラジンはやがて町でお姫様を見かけ、その美しさに心を奪われました。ランプの力で立派なお城を建て、王様の許しを得て、お姫様と結婚することになりました。
In time, Aladdin saw a princess in the town and lost his heart to her beauty. With the lamp's power he built a magnificent palace, gained the king's permission, and arranged to marry the princess.
しかし、悪い魔法使いはアラジンがまだ生きていると知り、商人のふりをしてお城へやって来ました。「古いランプを新しいランプと取りかえます」と大声で呼ぶと、ランプの価値を知らないお姫様は、喜んでそれを差し出してしまいました。
But the evil sorcerer learned that Aladdin was still alive and came to the palace disguised as a merchant. When he called out, "I'll trade new lamps for old," the princess, not knowing the lamp's value, happily handed it over.
魔法使いはランプを手に入れたとたん、魔神に命じて、お城ごとお姫様を遠い国へ運ばせました。帰って来たアラジンは、空っぽの場所を見て言葉を失いました。
The moment the sorcerer had the lamp, he ordered the genie to carry the palace and the princess off to a distant land. When Aladdin returned home and saw the empty space, he was speechless.
アラジンは指輪の魔神に頼んで、お姫様のいる国まで一気に飛んで行きました。「悲しまずに、わたしを信じてください」とお姫様に小声で告げ、二人で計画を立てたのです。
Aladdin asked the ring's genie to take him in one bound to the country where the princess was. "Don't despair — trust me," he whispered to her, and the two of them laid a plan together.
その夜、お姫様は魔法使いに、毒を入れた酒をすすめました。何も知らない魔法使いはそれを飲み、たちまち倒れてしまいました。アラジンは急いでランプを取り戻し、魔神にお城を元の場所へ運ぶよう命じました。
That night, the princess offered the sorcerer wine laced with poison. Suspecting nothing, he drank it and collapsed at once. Aladdin quickly recovered the lamp and ordered the genie to return the palace to its original place.
こうしてアラジンとお姫様は無事に国へ戻り、後にアラジンは立派な王として国を治めました。二人は末永く幸せに暮らしたということです。
In this way Aladdin and the princess made it safely back to their country, and later Aladdin ruled the kingdom as a fine king. The two are said to have lived happily ever after.
