昔々、ある所におじいさんとおばあさんがいました。二人は「シロ」という犬と、楽しく暮らしていました。
Once upon a time, in a certain place, there lived an old man and an old woman. They lived happily with a dog named "Shiro."
ある日、シロは畑で「ここを掘ってください」と鳴きました。おじいさんがそこを掘ると、たくさんの大判小判が出てきました。
One day, Shiro barked in the field, saying "Please dig here." When the old man dug there, many large and small gold coins appeared.
隣の悪いおじいさんは、シロを無理やり自分の畑へ連れて行きました。そして、「ここを掘れ」と言いました。しかし、そこからはゴミや泥しか出てきませんでした。
The greedy old man next door forcibly took Shiro to his own field. Then he said, "Dig here." However, only garbage and mud came out from there.
悪いおじいさんは怒って、可愛いシロを殺してしまいました。優しいおじいさんは泣きながら、シロのお墓に木を植えました。
The greedy old man got angry and killed cute Shiro. The kind old man, while crying, planted a tree at Shiro's grave.
木はすぐに大きく育ちました。おじいさんはその木で臼を作りました。その臼でお餅をつくと、お餅が全部大判小判になりました。
The tree grew large very quickly. The old man made a mortar from that tree. When he pounded rice cakes with that mortar, the rice cakes all turned into gold coins.
悪いおじいさんはその臼を借りてお餅をつきました。しかし、また泥しか出なかったので、臼を燃やして灰にしました。おじいさんは悲しんで、その灰をもらいました。
The greedy old man borrowed that mortar and pounded rice cakes. However, since only mud came out again, he burned the mortar and turned it into ashes. The kind old man was saddened and received those ashes.
おじいさんが枯れた桜の木にその灰をまくと、とても綺麗な花が咲きました。殿様はそれを見て、おじいさんにたくさんの褒美をあげました。
When the old man scattered those ashes on a withered cherry tree, very beautiful flowers bloomed. The lord saw this and gave the old man many rewards.
