日本では、お正月は一年でいちばん大切な行事です。クリスマスより、お正月のほうがずっと特別だと思う人が多いです。一月一日は「元日」と言って、家族みんなで新しい年をお祝いします。
In Japan, New Year is the most important event of the year. Many people feel it is far more special than Christmas. January 1 is called "Ganjitsu," and the whole family celebrates the new year together.
お正月の前に、家をきれいにしなければなりません。これを「大掃除」と言います。十二月の終わりに、窓やお風呂や台所を、家族みんなで掃除します。古い物を捨てたり、新しい飾りを玄関に置いたりします。少し大変ですけど、家がきれいになると、気持ちもいいです。
Before New Year, the house has to be thoroughly cleaned. This is called "osoji," the big year-end cleaning. At the end of December, the whole family cleans the windows, the bathroom, and the kitchen. People throw away old things and put new decorations at the entrance. It is a bit of work, but once the house is clean, it feels good.
十二月三十一日の夜は「大晦日」です。多くの家庭では、晩ご飯に年越しそばを食べます。長いそばを食べながら、長く元気に生きたいとお願いします。テレビでは特別な音楽番組をやっていて、家族みんなで見る人も多いです。
The night of December 31 is called "Omisoka," New Year's Eve. In many households, people have toshikoshi soba — long buckwheat noodles — for dinner. While eating the long noodles, they wish to live a long and healthy life. There are special music programs on TV, and many families watch them together.
一月一日の朝、おせち料理を食べます。おせち料理にはきれいな食べ物がたくさん入っていて、一つ一つに意味があります。例えば、黒い豆は「元気に働く」、海老は「長生き」を表します。それから、お雑煮という温かいスープも飲みます。中にはお餅が入っていますが、地域によって味が違います。
On the morning of January 1, people eat osechi ryori. Osechi is a set of beautifully arranged foods, and each item has a meaning. For example, black beans stand for working with energy, and shrimp stand for a long life. People also drink a warm soup called ozoni. It has mochi rice cakes inside, but the flavor varies from region to region.
お正月の三日間だけ、初詣に行く人がとても多いです。神社やお寺で、今年の幸せをお願いします。お守りを買ったり、おみくじを引いたりします。寒いですが、たくさんの人で神社はにぎやかです。
Only during the first three days of January, huge numbers of people go on hatsumode, the first shrine or temple visit of the year. They pray for a happy year, buy protective charms, and draw paper fortunes. It is cold, but the shrines are lively with crowds.
子供にとって、お正月でいちばん楽しいのはお年玉でしょう。お年玉は、おじいさんやおばあさん、親せきからもらうお金です。子供はそのお金で、好きな物を買ってもいいです。
For children, the most fun part of New Year is probably otoshidama. Otoshidama is money given by grandparents and relatives. Children may spend that money on anything they like.
お正月は、ゆっくり家族と話したり、テレビを見たりする静かな時間です。一年の終わりと始まりに、みんなで一緒にいられるから、日本人にとってお正月はとても大切なのです。
New Year is a quiet time to talk slowly with family and watch television together. Because everyone can be together at the end of one year and the start of the next, New Year is very precious to the Japanese.
