ある村に、とても真面目な男がいました。男は毎日、森へ木を切りに行きました。男が持っている斧は、古くて安い鉄の斧でした。
In a certain village, there was a very diligent man. Every day, the man went to the forest to cut wood. The axe he owned was an old and cheap iron axe.
ある日、男は川の近くで木を切っていました。男の斧が川の中へ落ちてしまいました。男は斧がないと仕事ができないので、とても困りました。
One day, the man was cutting wood near a river. His axe fell into the river. Since he couldn't work without an axe, he was very troubled.
すると、川から美しい神様が出てきました。神様は綺麗な金の斧を持っていました。「あなたが落としたのは、この金の斧ですか」と神様は聞きました。
Then, a beautiful deity emerged from the river. The deity held a beautiful golden axe. "Is this golden axe the one you dropped?" the deity asked.
「いいえ、私の斧は鉄の斧です」と男は答えました。次に、神様は銀の斧を見せました。「では、この銀の斧ですか。」男はまた「いいえ」と言って、首を振りました。
"No, my axe is an iron axe," the man replied. Next, the deity showed a silver axe. "Then, is it this silver axe?" The man shook his head and said "No" again.
神様は最後に普通の鉄の斧を出しました。男は「はい、それです」と答えました。神様は正直な男が一番好きになりました。
Finally, the deity brought out an ordinary iron axe. The man replied, "Yes, that's it." The deity came to like the honest man the most.
神様は男に金の斧と銀の斧と鉄の斧を全部あげました。男はとても喜んで家に帰りました。
The deity gave the man the golden axe, the silver axe, and the iron axe all together. The man returned home very happily.
