The Old Man Who Lost His Lump

An old man loses the lump on his cheek by dancing at an ogres' banquet — but his copycat neighbor fares less well.

Long, long ago, there lived an old man with a large lump on his right cheek. Because he was a hard worker, he paid the lump no mind and would go up into the mountains as usual to cut wood.

One evening, the sky suddenly clouded over and heavy rain began to fall. The old man found a large hollow in a tree and decided to take shelter inside for a while. Worn out, he eventually nodded off inside the hollow.

In the middle of the night, the lively sound of flutes and drums drifted in from outside. Peering quietly out, he saw a band of dreadful-looking ogres holding a banquet around a roaring fire.

The ogres drank and sang, looking as merry as could be. The old man, who had been trembling with fear at first, gradually felt his own spirits lift as he watched.

He had always loved to dance, and despite his lump he could not help springing out and joining the ogres' circle. His arms and legs moved smoothly, and his face was alive with delight.

"What a splendid dance!" the head ogre cried, clapping his hands in glee. The banquet went on noisily until nearly dawn, and the old man went on dancing until he was wonderfully tired.

"Be sure to come and dance for us tomorrow night too. As a pledge that you won't break your promise, we'll keep this lump of yours," said the chief, and lifted the great lump cleanly off the old man's cheek.

Stroking the cheek that had become startlingly light, the old man set off down the mountain path at dawn in great spirits. They say the old woman, on hearing the story, kept gazing at his face and wept for joy.

The tale spread through the village in no time. A neighbor, an old man with a lump on his left cheek, heard it and thought, "If I ask the ogres myself, surely they'll take my lump off too."

That night the neighbor went to the same mountain and hid in the same hollow tree. Once the ogres' banquet began, he forced his way into the circle and started to dance.

But the neighbor was a clumsy dancer, and he kept stumbling awkwardly through every step. The ogres grew furious and shouted, "At this rate even our wine will taste bad. Don't come again. Take this back and be off!"

And with that they stuck the lump they had been keeping from the day before onto the neighbor's right cheek. In the end the poor neighbor had to slink home with a heavy lump on each cheek. Even when you do the same thing, the outcome can differ greatly depending on the spirit behind it.
