Meaning

Describes someone's feelings, state of mind, or atmosphere based on their appearance.

Note

A slightly literary expression used to describe the atmosphere or emotional state of a person based on outward appearance. It is more formal than 'sou da'. It is primarily used for others (not the speaker) and should not be used when referring to persons of higher status.

Examples

彼は何か言いたげな顔をして、こちらを見ている。

He is looking this way with a face that seems like he wants to say something.

彼女はどこか恥ずかしげに、うつむいて笑った。

She looked down and smiled somewhat bashfully.

少年は寂しげな表情で、遠くの空を眺めていた。

The boy was gazing at the distant sky with a lonely expression.

不採用の通知を受け取った彼は、悲しげに肩を落とした。

Having received the rejection notice, he dropped his shoulders looking sad.

合格発表を待つ学生たちは、不安げな様子で並んでいる。

The students waiting for the exam results are standing in line looking anxious.

彼女は得意げに自分の作品をみんなに見せた。

She proudly showed her work to everyone.
