1A general word for a bag — any holdall, case, or carrier used to take things with you. Covers everything from business briefcases and a child's randoseru school bag to suitcases and tote bags, regardless of shape or material. Usually written in hiragana as 「かばん」; the katakana 「カバン」 also appears. The kanji 「鞄」 is harder to read and uncommon in everyday text, but shows up on shop signs (「鞄屋」 = bag shop), in product names, and in newspaper writing.
