1An evening greeting (good evening), used when meeting someone at night. Written こんばんは, but the final は is the topic particle and is pronounced 'wa'. Usually written in kana; the kanji form 今晩は is uncommon.
こんばんは。今日は冷えますね。
Good evening. It's chilly today, isn't it?
夜道で近所の人に会い、「こんばんは」と声をかけた。
