しち
Alternative readings: なな
Alternative writings: , ,
JLPT:N3
Frequency:

1The number seven (7); indicating seven units or the seventh in a series. The two main readings are the Sino-Japanese しち and the native-Japanese なな. Because しち is easily confused by ear with 一 (いち) or 四 (し), なな is preferred when clarity matters (e.g. saying phone numbers aloud). In compounds the reading な appears (七日 なのか, 七夕 たなばた as gikun), and parts of the Kansai region pronounce 七 as ひち. The variant 漆 is used in legal documents to prevent forgery.
