1Gojūon — the traditional chart of Japanese kana arranged in five vowels by ten consonant rows (a-i-u-e-o, ka-ki-ku-ke-ko, etc.). Though the name means 'fifty sounds,' modern Japanese uses about 46 basic kana. 五十音順 (gojūon order) is the standard alphabetical ordering used in Japanese dictionaries and name lists.
