1Futon — Japanese-style bedding made up of a 敷き布団 (mattress laid on the floor or tatami) and a 掛け布団 (duvet on top). Traditionally folded up and stored in the closet during the day.

2A round cushion used in Zen meditation (zafu), originally woven from 蒲 (bulrush) — this is the etymological root of 布団/蒲団. In modern everyday Japanese 布団 alone almost never carries this sense; 座蒲 or 座布団 is used instead, typically in temple or Buddhist contexts.
