1To think, believe, or hold an opinion about something. The most basic use of 思う, typically with ~と思う to express opinions or judgments.

I think he's an honest person.

多くの人がそう思っている。

2To think of doing something; to plan or intend to do something. Used with the volitional form: ~(よ)うと思う.

I'm planning to study abroad in Japan next year.

もう一度挑戦しようと思う。

I think I'll try one more time.

夏休みに家族と旅行に行こうと思っています。

I think I'll go to bed early tonight.

3To judge, assess, or regard something as having a certain quality. Closer to forming an evaluation than expressing a casual opinion.

彼女はその仕事にふさわしい人材だと思う。

I regard her as the right person for that job.

この案は現実的ではないと思う。

I judge this proposal to be unrealistic.

彼の対応は不十分だと思った。

I judged his response to be insufficient.

4To imagine, picture, or dream up a scene or situation in one's mind. Can be written 想う when the imagining is emotional or wistful.

子供の頃は冒険家になると想っていた。

As a child, I imagined I'd become an adventurer.

その光景を思うだけでワクワクする。

Just imagining that scene gets me excited.

彼女のいない生活なんて思うこともできない。

I can't even imagine a life without her.

5To expect something or look forward to it, often in the pattern ~と思う or 楽しみに思う.

I'm really looking forward to tomorrow's field trip.

試験に合格するだろうと思い、少し安心している。

I expect I'll pass the exam, so I feel a bit relieved.

6To feel a certain emotion or be in a particular state of mind, often in patterns like 〜く思う or 〜に思う.

7To care deeply for, yearn for, worry about, or love someone — direct strong feelings toward a person or thing. Often written 想う for emphasis.

Thinking of my family far away brought tears to my eyes.

彼女のことをずっと想ってきた。

I have cared for her all this time.

子供の幸せを思わない親はいない。

There's no parent who doesn't care about their child's happiness.

8To recall or remember; to think back on the past. Softer and more reflective than 思い出す.

When I think back to my childhood, I feel nostalgic.

ふと昔の友人のことを思うことがある。

Sometimes I find myself suddenly thinking of an old friend.

あの夏のことを思うと、今でも胸が熱くなる。

Whenever I think of that summer, my heart still feels warm.
