1Multiplication — the arithmetic operation of adding a number to itself a given number of times. Also called 乗法 (jōhō) in formal/mathematical contexts. Japanese children learn it in second grade through the 九九 (kuku, the multiplication table); the symbol is ×. Because the kanji 掛 only entered the jōyō list in 2010, elementary school textbooks still commonly write it as かけ算.
