1The standard first-person pronoun ('I' / 'me'). Used by speakers of any gender or age, and natural in both polite and everyday speech. In more formal contexts わたくし is preferred; in casual male speech 俺 or 僕 is more common. The kanji 私 has many possible readings (わたくし, し, あっし, わっち, …), but わたし is by far the most common one in modern Japanese.
私は大阪生まれです。

This isn't my umbrella.
先生は私の名前を覚えてくれていた。
The teacher remembered my name.
