Pervasive in written Japanese: textbooks (第1課 'Lesson 1'), book/legal structure (第3章 'Chapter 3'), event series (第5回 'the 5th edition'), history (第二次世界大戦 'World War II'), rankings (第6位 'sixth place'). Compared with a bare number, 第 explicitly frames the figure as a sequenced position. Read as だい (dai).
