In Japan, you have to sort your garbage carefully when you put it out. It is divided into several categories — burnable, non-burnable, recyclable, and bulky — and the rule is that you separate everything before disposal. For someone new to the system, it can feel surprisingly complicated at first.
Burnable trash includes paper, food scraps, and kitchen waste. Non-burnable trash covers things like metal and glass. Plastic bottles, cans, and glass bottles have to be put out separately as recyclables. Plastic bottles also need their caps and labels removed, and the inside lightly rinsed, before being thrown out. The goal is to make recycling work.
Collection days are decided by area. For example, burnable trash on Monday and Thursday, recyclables on Wednesday, non-burnable on the second and fourth Saturday — each weekday is for a different type. You can't put garbage out on days other than the scheduled one. If you do, the bag will be left behind on the street.
