昔々、ある小さな村に、正直な木こりが住んでいました。木こりはとても貧しかったですが、毎日朝早く森へ木を切りに行きました。木こりが持っている斧は、古い鉄の斧が一つだけでした。
Long ago, in a small village, there lived an honest woodcutter. The woodcutter was very poor, but every day he went into the forest early in the morning to chop wood. The only axe he owned was a single old iron axe.
ある日、木こりは大きな川のそばで木を切っていました。汗をかきながら、一生懸命に働いていました。「もう少しで終わるから、頑張ろう」と木こりは思いました。けど、その時、手から斧が落ちて、深い川の中に入ってしまいました。
One day, the woodcutter was chopping wood beside a large river. Sweating, he worked with all his might. "I'm almost done, so let me push on," the woodcutter thought. But just then, the axe slipped from his hands and fell into the deep river.
「ああ、私の大切な斧が……。これがないと、仕事ができない」と木こりは泣きました。木こりは川のそばに座って、ずっと泣いていました。
"Oh no, my precious axe... Without it, I can't work," the woodcutter cried. He sat down by the river and wept for a long time.
すると、川の中から神様が出てきました。神様は光る金の斧を持っていました。「あなたが落としたのは、この金の斧ですか」と神様が聞きました。木こりは「いいえ、私のではありません」と答えました。
Then, a god rose up out of the river. The god was holding a shining golden axe. "Is this golden axe the one you dropped?" the god asked. The woodcutter answered, "No, that is not mine."
神様は次に、銀の斧を見せました。「では、この銀の斧ですか。」木こりはまた首を振って、「いいえ、それも私のではありません」と言いました。最後に神様は古い鉄の斧を出しました。「はい、それが私の斧です」と木こりは嬉しそうに答えました。
Next, the god showed him a silver axe. "Then, is it this silver axe?" The woodcutter shook his head again and said, "No, that is not mine either." Finally, the god brought out the old iron axe. "Yes, that is my axe," the woodcutter answered happily.
神様は「あなたは本当に正直な人ですね。正直がいちばん大切ですよ」と言って、三つの斧を全部木こりにあげました。木こりは何度もお礼を言って、家に帰りました。
The god said, "You truly are an honest man. Honesty is the most important thing of all," and gave all three axes to the woodcutter. The woodcutter thanked him over and over and went home.
次の日、隣の家の欲張りな男がこの話を聞きました。男は「私も金の斧がほしい」と思って、同じ川へ行きました。男はわざと自分の斧を川に落として、大きな声で泣きました。
The next day, a greedy man from the house next door heard this story. The man thought, "I want a golden axe too," and went to the same river. He dropped his own axe into the river on purpose and cried out loudly.
神様がまた出てきて、金の斧を見せました。男は「はい、それは私の斧です」とすぐに嘘をつきました。神様は怒って、金の斧を川の中に戻しました。男は自分の鉄の斧ももらえないで、何も持たないで家に帰りました。
The god appeared again and showed him the golden axe. The man immediately lied and said, "Yes, that is my axe." The god grew angry and put the golden axe back into the river. The man did not even get his own iron axe back, and went home empty-handed.
