When winter comes, many households in Japan start using their kotatsu. A kotatsu is a low table with a heater mounted underneath and a quilt draped over the top. Because it works as both a table and a heater, it has become indispensable to winter life in Japan.

Slip your legs under the kotatsu and you warm up almost instantly. Electricity costs are much lower than running an air conditioner, so some people get through winter using only the kotatsu. There's no need to heat the entire room, which is eco-friendly and easy on the wallet. Old Japanese houses are cold and let in drafts, but with a kotatsu, at least your feet stay warm all winter.

Eating mandarin oranges while sitting at the kotatsu is a classic Japanese winter scene. Watching TV or chatting with family while peeling mandarins makes for a deeply happy time. Why mandarins? Reportedly because they don't spoil easily when stored near the kotatsu, and because the vitamin C helps prevent colds.
