Getting a clear picture of your monthly income and expenses is an indispensable habit for living a stable life. For the first few years after I started working, I would burn through my paycheck the moment it landed, and by the end of the month I dreaded checking my account balance. It was only in my late twenties that I realized I couldn't go on living like that forever. The trigger was a friend who was starting to think about marriage mentioning that "apparently you need twenty million yen put away before retirement" — and I felt deeply uneasy about how unprepared I was.
When I decided to put my finances back in order, the first thing I did was write down every expense from the previous three months. As I sorted through receipts and statements, I was shocked at how much waste turned up — small convenience-store purchases, video subscriptions I barely used. Even though my income was hardly low, I finally understood why my savings refused to grow.
Drawing on that experience, I started experimenting with a method of splitting my monthly income into three parts. About fifty percent goes to fixed costs like rent, utilities, and phone bills; thirty percent to variable costs like food and social outings; and the remaining twenty percent goes into savings and investments. The proportions shift a little depending on my income, but just being aware of the ratio made the overall picture of my spending far easier to grasp. Among the fixed costs, switching my phone to a budget SIM alone freed up about six thousand yen a month, which adds up to more than seventy thousand yen a year.
For the actual record-keeping, I started with a paper budget book, but it was so much work that I gave up many times. Now I use a household-budget app on my smartphone, linked to my bank accounts and credit cards, so most transactions are recorded automatically. Apps that read line items straight from a photo of a receipt are becoming more common, and even on a busy weekday I can finish a day's entry in a few minutes. There are apps you can share with family and ones that show your spending trends as graphs — these days you can pick one to fit your purpose.
