むかしむかし、ある森の近くに、お母さん豚と三びきの子豚が住んでいました。子豚たちは大きくなったから、お母さんは「自分の家を作りに行きなさい」と言いました。三びきの子豚は母の家を出て、新しい家を作りに行きました。
Long ago, near a certain forest, there lived a mother pig and three little pigs. Because the little pigs had grown up, the mother said, "Go and build your own houses." The three little pigs left their mother's home and set off to build new houses.
一番目の兄豚は、わらで家を作りました。「わらは軽いから、すぐ家ができるよ」と兄豚は歌いながら、楽な家を作りました。二番目の兄豚は、木で家を作りました。「木の家もすぐできるよ」と言って、のんびり休みながら作りました。
The first older brother pig built his house out of straw. "Straw is light, so the house will be finished quickly," he sang while he built his easy house. The second older brother pig built his house out of wood. "A wooden house will be done quickly too," he said, and he built it leisurely, resting now and then.
三番目の弟豚は、毎日れんがを運んで、とても丈夫な家を作りました。兄たちは「そんなに重いれんがを運ばなくてもいいよ。僕たちの家はもう完成したよ」と笑いました。しかし、弟豚は「丈夫な家を作らなければなりません」と言って、休まないで働きました。
The third younger brother pig carried bricks every day and built a very sturdy house. His older brothers laughed, "You don't have to carry such heavy bricks. Our houses are already finished." But the younger brother said, "I have to build a strong house," and he worked without resting.
ある日、おそろしい狼が一番目の兄豚の家に来ました。狼は「子豚を食べたい！おうちを吹き飛ばしてやる！」と大きな声で言いました。兄豚は「入ってはいけません！」と答えました。狼はふうっと強く息を吹いて、わらの家を吹き飛ばしました。兄豚は急いで二番目の兄の家に逃げました。
One day, a scary wolf came to the first older brother's house. The wolf shouted in a loud voice, "I want to eat the little pig! I'll blow your house down!" The older brother answered, "You must not come in!" The wolf huffed and puffed hard and blew the straw house away. The older brother hurried and fled to the second brother's house.
少し後に、狼は二番目の兄の家にも来ました。「おうちを吹き飛ばしてやる！」と狼はまた言いました。二びきの豚は「開けてはいけない」と思いましたが、狼はふうっと吹いて、木の家もこわしてしまいました。二びきは弟のれんがの家に走って逃げました。
A little later, the wolf came to the second brother's house too. "I'll blow your house down!" the wolf said again. The two pigs thought, "We must not open the door," but the wolf huffed and puffed and broke the wooden house too. The two pigs ran and fled to their younger brother's brick house.
最後に、狼は弟豚のれんがの家に来ました。「おうちを吹き飛ばしてやる！」と狼は何度も息を吹きましたが、れんがの家はわらの家より、木の家よりずっと丈夫で、全然こわれません。狼は「煙突から中に入ろう」と思って、屋根に上りました。
Finally, the wolf came to the younger brother's brick house. "I'll blow your house down!" The wolf blew and blew, but the brick house was much sturdier than the straw house and than the wooden house, and it did not break at all. The wolf thought, "I'll go inside through the chimney," and he climbed onto the roof.
しかし、子豚たちは煙突の下に、お湯がたくさん入った大きな鍋を置いていました。狼は煙突から落ちて、熱いお湯で大やけどをしました。狼は泣きながら、山の中へ逃げて行きました。三びきの子豚は、れんがの家の中でずっと幸せに暮らしました。
However, the little pigs had placed a big pot full of hot water under the chimney. The wolf fell down the chimney and was badly burned by the hot water. Crying, the wolf ran off into the mountains. The three little pigs lived happily ever after inside their brick house.
