昔々、あるところに、おじいさんとおばあさんが住んでいました。おじいさんは山へ仕事に行き、おばあさんは川へ洗濯に行きました。おばあさんが川で洗濯をしていると、大きな桃が流れてきました。「とても美味しそうな桃だから、おじいさんと一緒に食べよう」と思って、家に持って帰ることにしました。
Once upon a time, an old man and an old woman lived in a certain place. The old man went to the mountain to work, and the old woman went to the river to wash clothes. While the old woman was washing clothes at the river, a large peach came floating down. Thinking, "This looks like a very delicious peach, so I will eat it together with the old man," she decided to take it home.
家でおじいさんが桃を切ってみると、中から元気な男の子が出てきました。桃から生まれたので、「桃太郎」という名前にしました。桃太郎は、ご飯をたくさん食べて、すぐに大きくて強い男の子になりました。ある日、桃太郎は「村の人のために、鬼ヶ島に行きたい。そして、悪い鬼を退治するつもりだ」と言いました。
When the old man tried cutting the peach at home, a healthy boy came out from inside. Because he was born from a peach, they named him Momotaro. Momotaro ate a lot of rice and quickly became a big and strong boy. One day, Momotaro said, "For the sake of the villagers, I want to go to Onigashima. And, I intend to defeat the bad ogres."
おじいさんとおばあさんは心配しましたが、美味しいきびだんごを作ってあげました。桃太郎は、きびだんごを持って出かけました。道を歩いていると、犬が来て、「そのきびだんごを一つくれたら、一緒に行きます」と言いました。その後、猿とキジもやって来て、桃太郎の仲間になりました。
The old man and the old woman were worried, but they made delicious millet dumplings for him. Momotaro took the millet dumplings and set off. As he was walking along the road, a dog came and said, "If you give me one of those millet dumplings, I will go with you." After that, a monkey and a pheasant also came and became Momotaro's companions.
桃太郎と動物たちは、船に乗って鬼ヶ島へ行きました。島に着くと、強そうな鬼たちが集まっているところでした。桃太郎たちは力を合わせて、一生懸命に戦いました。鬼の親分は「もう悪いことはしないので、許してください」と泣いて謝りました。
Momotaro and the animals boarded a boat and went to Onigashima. When they arrived at the island, strong-looking ogres were just gathering together. Momotaro and his friends combined their strength and fought with all their might. The boss of the ogres cried and apologized, saying, "I won't do bad things anymore, so please forgive me."
桃太郎は鬼を許してあげることにしました。そして、鬼が持っていた宝物をもらって、みんなで村へ帰りました。おじいさんとおばあさんは「無事に帰ってきてくれてよかった」と言いました。それから、みんなでずっと平和に暮らしたそうです。
Momotaro decided to forgive the ogres. Then, they received the treasure that the ogres had and returned to the village together. The old man and the old woman said, "We are glad that you came back safely." From then on, it is said that they all lived peacefully forever.
