昔々、ある村に優しいおじいさんとおばあさんが住んでいました。ある朝、おじいさんは山へ木を切りに行きました。おばあさんは「お弁当を作ったから、お昼に食べてください」と言って、おむすびを三つ渡しました。
Long, long ago, in a certain village, there lived a kind old man and old woman. One morning, the old man went to the mountains to cut wood. The old woman said, "I made you a lunch, so please eat it at noon," and handed him three rice balls.
お昼になりました。おじいさんは木の下で休みながら、おむすびを食べたいと思いました。しかし、一つ目のおむすびが手から落ちて、「ころころ」と転がって、小さな穴の中に入ってしまいました。
It became noon. While resting under a tree, the old man wanted to eat his rice balls. However, the first rice ball slipped from his hand and rolled "koro koro" right into a small hole.
おじいさんが穴に耳を近づけると、可愛い歌が聞こえてきました。「おむすびころりん、すっとんとん。おむすびころりん、すっとんとん。」おじいさんはもっと聞きたかったから、もう一つおむすびを穴の中に入れました。また楽しい歌が聞こえてきました。
When the old man put his ear close to the hole, he heard a cute song. "Rice ball rolling, suttontton. Rice ball rolling, suttontton." The old man wanted to hear more, so he dropped another rice ball into the hole. Again the cheerful song floated up.
おじいさんは嬉しくて、踊りながら歌いました。すると、足が滑って、おじいさんも穴の中に落ちてしまいました。穴の中には、たくさんのねずみがいました。ねずみたちは「ようこそ、おじいさん。おむすびをありがとう」と言って、美味しいご飯を出してくれました。
The old man was so happy that he sang while dancing. Then his foot slipped, and he too fell into the hole. Inside the hole there were many mice. The mice said, "Welcome, old man. Thank you for the rice balls," and brought out a delicious meal for him.
おじいさんはねずみたちと一緒に、歌ったり踊ったりして遊びました。帰る前に、ねずみたちは小さな箱をくれました。「これはお礼の宝物です。家に帰ってから開けてください。」おじいさんは「ありがとう」と言って、家に帰りました。箱の中には、たくさんの小判が入っていました。
The old man sang and danced and played with the mice. Before he left, the mice gave him a small box. "This is our treasure, a thank-you gift. Please open it after you get home." The old man said thank you and went home. Inside the box were many gold coins.
隣に欲張りなおじいさんが住んでいました。話を聞いて、「私もお金がほしい」と思いました。次の日、欲張りなおじいさんは山に行って、わざとおむすびを穴に落としました。穴の中から歌が聞こえると、待たないで、すぐに穴の中に飛び込みました。
Next door lived a greedy old man. When he heard the story, he thought, "I want money too." The next day, the greedy old man went to the mountain and dropped a rice ball into the hole on purpose. When he heard the song from inside the hole, he did not wait and jumped straight in.
ねずみたちはびっくりしました。欲張りなおじいさんは「宝物をたくさんくれ。優しいおじいさんより、もっとほしい」と大きな声で言いました。それから、ねずみを捕まえたいと思って、「にゃーお」と猫の鳴き声を出しました。ねずみたちは怖くて、急いで逃げました。
The mice were startled. The greedy old man shouted loudly, "Give me lots of treasure. I want more than the kind old man got." Then, wanting to catch the mice, he made a cat's cry, "Meow." The mice were scared and quickly ran away.
部屋の中は暗くなりました。欲張りなおじいさんは何も見えなくて、宝物ももらえないで、一人で穴の中に残りました。優しいおじいさんとおばあさんは、その後もずっと幸せに暮らしました。
The room grew dark. The greedy old man could see nothing, received no treasure, and was left all alone inside the hole. The kind old man and old woman lived happily ever after.
