むかしむかし、小さな村に、おじいさんとおばあさんが住んでいました。ある春の朝、おじいさんは畑に行って、かぶの種をまきました。「甘くて、大きくて、世界でいちばん立派なかぶになってください」と、おじいさんは土に話しかけながら言いました。
Long, long ago, in a small village, there lived an old man and an old woman. One spring morning, the old man went to the field and sowed turnip seeds. "Please become a sweet, big, and the most splendid turnip in the world," the old man said, talking to the soil as he worked.
何日も後に、かぶの葉っぱが出ました。おじいさんは毎日畑へ水をやりに行きました。雨の日も、風の日も、休まないで世話をしました。
Many days later, the turnip leaves came out. The old man went to the field every day to water them. On rainy days and windy days, he took care of them without resting.
夏になってから、かぶはとても大きく育ちました。お家より大きい、信じられないほどのかぶでした。「これはすごい。今日、抜きたいと思う」と、おじいさんは言いました。
After summer came, the turnip had grown very large. It was a turnip bigger than a house, almost unbelievable. "This is amazing. I want to pull it up today," the old man said.
おじいさんは畑へ行って、かぶの葉っぱを両手で持ちました。「うんとこしょ、どっこいしょ。」一生懸命に引っ張りましたが、かぶは大きすぎて、一人では抜くことができませんでした。
The old man went to the field and held the turnip leaves with both hands. "Heave-ho, heave-ho!" He pulled with all his might, but the turnip was too big, and he could not pull it up by himself.
「おばあさん、ちょっと手伝ってください」と、おじいさんは家に帰って呼びました。おばあさんがおじいさんを引っ張って、おじいさんがかぶを引っ張りました。「うんとこしょ、どっこいしょ。」けれど、かぶはまだ抜けません。
"Old woman, please come help for a moment," the old man called as he went back to the house. The old woman pulled the old man, and the old man pulled the turnip. "Heave-ho, heave-ho!" But the turnip still would not come out.
それから、おばあさんは孫を呼びに行きました。孫が来て、おばあさんを引っ張りました。次に、孫は犬を呼びました。犬は猫を呼びました。みんなで力を合わせて、引っ張ったり、休んだりしましたが、かぶは全然動きません。
Then the old woman went to call the granddaughter. The granddaughter came and pulled the old woman. Next, the granddaughter called the dog. The dog called the cat. Everyone joined forces, pulling and resting, pulling and resting, but the turnip would not move at all.
「もっと小さい友だちが来たら、抜けるかもしれない」と、猫は言いました。猫は小さなねずみを呼んできました。ねずみは「私もがんばります」と元気に言いました。

その夜、みんなで大きなかぶのスープを作って、一緒に食べました。スープはとても甘くて、世界でいちばん美味しかったです。「やっぱり、みんなで食べるご飯がいちばんですね」と、おばあさんは笑いながら言いました。
That night, everyone made giant turnip soup and ate it together. The soup was very sweet, the most delicious in the world. "After all, a meal eaten with everyone is the best," the old woman said, laughing.
