昔々、ある小さな国に、優しい王様がいました。王様は毎日、大きくて立派な帽子を被っていました。王様は朝も昼も夜も、その帽子を取りませんでした。だから、国の人は誰も王様の本当の頭を見たことがありませんでした。
Once upon a time, in a small country, there lived a kind king. Every day, the king wore a big, splendid hat. Morning, noon, and night, he never took the hat off. So no one in the country had ever seen the king's real head.
王様には、大きな秘密がありました。王様の耳は、ロバの耳と同じだったのです。長くて、毛がたくさん生えていました。王様はその耳がとても恥ずかしくて、いつも帽子の中に隠していました。
The king had a big secret. His ears were the same as a donkey's ears. They were long and covered in thick hair. The king was very embarrassed about those ears, and he always hid them inside his hat.
しかし、髪は段々長くなりますから、王様は時々髪を切らなければなりませんでした。王様は一人の床屋だけを城に呼びました。「私の耳のことを、誰にも話してはいけない。話したら、大変なことになるよ」と王様は強い声で言いました。床屋は怖くなって、「はい、絶対に話しません」と約束しました。
But hair gradually grows longer, so the king sometimes had to have his hair cut. The king called only one barber to the castle. "You must not tell anyone about my ears. If you tell, something terrible will happen," the king said in a strong voice. The barber got scared and promised, "Yes, I will absolutely never tell."
それから、床屋は毎日苦しくなりました。秘密を持つのは、こんなに重いことだと初めて知りました。家でご飯を食べながら、奥さんに話したくなりました。友達とお酒を飲みながら、叫びたくなりました。でも、王様との約束を守らなければなりません。床屋は段々病気のようになりました。
After that, the barber became distressed every day. He learned for the first time how heavy it is to carry a secret. While eating dinner at home, he wanted to tell his wife. While drinking with his friends, he wanted to shout it out. But he had to keep his promise to the king. The barber gradually became like a sick man.
ある日、床屋は森の中に行きました。誰もいない場所で、大きな穴を掘りました。そして、その穴の中に顔を入れて、「王様の耳はロバの耳！王様の耳はロバの耳！」と何回も叫びました。それから、穴を土で閉めました。床屋は気持ちがとても軽くなって、笑いながら家に帰りました。
One day, the barber went into the forest. In a place where no one was around, he dug a big hole. Then he put his face into the hole and shouted again and again, "The king's ears are donkey's ears! The king's ears are donkey's ears!" After that, he covered the hole with dirt. The barber felt much lighter, and he went home laughing.
次の年の春、その場所に高い葦がたくさん生えました。風が吹くと、葦は「王様の耳はロバの耳、王様の耳はロバの耳」と歌いました。森を歩く人も、近くの村の人も、その歌を聞きました。秘密はすぐに国中に広がりました。
In the spring of the next year, many tall reeds grew in that place. When the wind blew, the reeds sang, "The king's ears are donkey's ears, the king's ears are donkey's ears." People walking in the forest, and people in the nearby village, all heard the song. The secret quickly spread across the whole country.
王様はその話を聞いて、最初はとても怒りました。でも、少し考えてから、「隠すより、本当のことを見せる方がいい」と思いました。王様は城の前に出て、初めて帽子を取りました。「みんな、見てください。これが私の本当の耳です」と王様は言いました。
When the king heard the story, at first he was very angry. But after thinking a little, he thought, "It is better to show the truth than to hide it." The king came out in front of the castle and, for the first time, took off his hat. "Everyone, please look. These are my real ears," the king said.
国の人は驚きましたが、王様を笑いませんでした。「正直な王様が大好きです」とみんなは叫びました。床屋ももう苦しくありませんでした。その日から、王様はもう帽子を被らないで、毎日元気に国を歩きました。
The people of the country were surprised, but they did not laugh at the king. "We love an honest king the most," everyone shouted. The barber was no longer distressed either. From that day on, the king never wore a hat again, and every day he walked cheerfully through his country.
