Public Baths

An article introducing Japanese bath culture, including the difference between sento and onsen, bathing etiquette, and the yuzu bath.

Japan has a long tradition of soaking in large baths. The tub at home is small, but a sento (neighborhood bathhouse) or an onsen (hot spring) is spacious and feels wonderful. You have probably heard of them before.

A sento and an onsen are a little different. A sento sits in the middle of town, and the neighbors come to bathe there. An onsen is found near the mountains or the sea, and it uses hot water that rises naturally from the ground. An onsen costs a bit more, but many people visit one when they travel.

Long ago, many people did not have a bath at home, so everyone went to the sento every day. While soaking in the water, they would chat with their neighbors and play with the children. The sento was not only a place to wash; it was an important place where the whole town came together.

Sento and onsen have a few rules. Before getting into the water, you must wash your body thoroughly with soap. You cannot put your towel into the water. You also cannot wear a swimsuit. So that everyone can enjoy the bath, please follow the rules.

In winter there is a charming custom. At the end of December, people drop a fruit called yuzu into the water. It gives off a lovely scent, and people say it warms the body well. They say that if a family takes a yuzu bath together, no one will catch a cold that winter.

Today almost every home has a bath, so the number of sento has become much smaller than before. Even so, the sento remains an important part of Japanese culture. If you go to Japan, please try one at least once. I think it feels even better than the bath at home.
