むかしむかし、山の近くにさるとかにが住んでいました。ある日、かには道でおむすびを拾いました。さるは木の下で柿の種を見つけました。さるは「おむすびより、この種の方がいいよ」と言って、かにとおむすびを交換しました。
Long ago, a monkey and a crab lived near a mountain. One day, the crab found a rice ball on the road. The monkey found a persimmon seed under a tree. The monkey said, "This seed is better than a rice ball," and traded with the crab for the rice ball.
家に帰った後に、かには種を庭に植えました。そして「早く芽を出さないと、はさみで切るぞ」と歌いながら、毎日水をあげました。すると、種はすぐに大きな木になって、たくさんの赤い柿がなりました。
After going home, the crab planted the seed in the garden. Then, while singing "If you don't sprout soon, I'll cut you with my claws," she watered it every day. Soon the seed grew into a big tree, and many red persimmons grew on it.
かには柿を食べたかったですが、木に登ることができません。そこへさるが来て、「私が取ってあげるから、待っていてください」と言いました。かには喜んで、木の下で待ちました。
The crab wanted to eat the persimmons, but she could not climb the tree. The monkey came by and said, "I'll pick them for you, so please wait." The crab was happy and waited under the tree.
しかし、さるは木の上で甘い柿だけを自分で食べました。かにが「私にも一つください」と言うと、さるは青くて硬い柿をかにに投げました。かには大けがをして、泣きながら家に帰りました。
However, up in the tree the monkey ate only the sweet persimmons himself. When the crab said, "Please give me one too," the monkey threw a green, hard persimmon at her. The crab was badly hurt and went home crying.
かにの子供たちはお母さんの話を聞いて、とても怒りました。「お母さんのために、さるをこらしめに行こう」と言って、家を出ました。途中で栗と蜂と牛のふんと臼に会いました。みんなは「私たちも手伝いたい」と言って、一緒に行きました。
The crab's children heard their mother's story and became very angry. They said, "For Mother's sake, let's go punish the monkey," and left the house. On the way, they met a chestnut, a wasp, some cow dung, and a mortar. Everyone said, "We want to help too," and went with them.
さるの家に着く前に、みんなで作戦を立てました。栗はいろりの中、蜂は水がめの中、牛のふんは入り口、臼は屋根の上に隠れました。そして、静かにさるを待ちました。
Before reaching the monkey's house, they all made a plan. The chestnut hid in the hearth, the wasp hid in the water jar, the cow dung hid at the entrance, and the mortar hid on the roof. Then they quietly waited for the monkey.
しばらく後に、さるが家に帰ってきました。「寒いから、火にあたろう」と思って、いろりに近づきました。その時、熱くなった栗がさるの顔に飛んできました。「熱い！」とさるは叫んで、水で冷やそうとしました。すると、水がめの中から蜂が出てきて、さるを刺しました。
A little later, the monkey came home. Thinking "It's cold, so I'll warm myself by the fire," he went near the hearth. At that moment, the hot chestnut flew into the monkey's face. "Hot!" the monkey screamed, and tried to cool himself with water. Then the wasp came out of the water jar and stung him.
さるは急いで外へ逃げようとしましたが、入り口の牛のふんですべって転びました。そして、屋根の上から重い臼が落ちてきました。さるは「ごめんなさい。もう悪いことはしません」と謝りました。かにの子供たちは、お母さんのかたきを取ることができました。
The monkey hurriedly tried to flee outside, but he slipped on the cow dung at the entrance and fell. Then the heavy mortar dropped down from the roof. The monkey apologized, saying, "I'm sorry. I won't do bad things anymore." The crab's children were able to avenge their mother.
