昔々、ある山のふもとの村に、心の優しいおじいさんと、欲張りで意地悪なおばあさんが住んでいました。ある日、おじいさんが畑から帰る途中、道に怪我をした小さな雀が落ちているのを見つけました。「これは可哀想に。家で元気になるまで世話をしてあげよう」と思って、おじいさんは雀を大事に抱えて帰りました。
Long ago, in a village at the foot of a mountain, there lived a kindhearted old man together with a greedy, mean-spirited old woman. One day, on his way home from the fields, the old man came across a small, injured sparrow lying on the road. "Oh, the poor thing. I'll take care of it at home until it gets better," he thought, and gently carried the sparrow home in his arms.
その日からおじいさんは、毎日米粒や水を雀にあげて、優しく育てました。雀もすっかりおじいさんに慣れて、肩に乗ったり、後をついて歩いたりするようになりました。
From that day on, the old man gave the sparrow grains of rice and water every day, raising it with great tenderness. The sparrow grew quite used to him, perching on his shoulder and following him around.
しかし、おばあさんは前から雀のことが好きではありませんでした。ある日、おばあさんが大切にしていた糊を雀が食べてしまったので、おばあさんは「この憎たらしい鳥め」と怒って、はさみで雀の舌を切ってしまいました。雀は痛さに泣きながら、窓から空へ飛んでいきました。
The old woman, however, had never been fond of the bird. One day, when the sparrow ate the rice paste she had been carefully preparing, the old woman shouted, "You hateful little bird!" and, in her rage, cut off the sparrow's tongue with a pair of scissors. The sparrow flew out the window and into the sky, weeping with pain.
仕事から帰ったおじいさんはその話を聞いて、涙が出るほど悲しくなりました。次の朝、彼は「雀がどこにいるか、自分で探してみるしかない」と言って、山へ出かけました。
When the old man returned from work and heard the story, he was so sad that tears came to his eyes. The next morning he said, "There's nothing for it but to go find the sparrow myself," and set off into the mountains.
何時間も山の中を歩きながら、「舌切り雀のお宿はどこ」と呼びかけていると、竹やぶの中から声が聞こえてきました。そこには立派な雀の宿があり、舌を切られた雀が元気な姿で出てきて、「ようこそ来てくださいました」と歓迎してくれました。
After walking for hours through the woods, calling out "Tongue-cut sparrow, where is your inn?", he heard a voice answering from within a bamboo grove. There stood a splendid sparrow's inn, and the very sparrow whose tongue had been cut came out, looking healthy and bright, and welcomed him: "How good of you to come."
雀たちは、おじいさんのために美味しいご飯を出したり、踊りを見せたりして、にぎやかにもてなしました。夕方になり、おじいさんが「もう帰ります」と言うと、雀は二つの行李を持ってきました。
The sparrows served the old man a delicious meal, performed dances, and entertained him grandly. As evening fell and the old man said, "I really must be going home now," the sparrow brought out two wicker chests.
「大きい行李と小さい行李があります。お土産にどちらがいいですか」と聞きました。「年寄りだから、軽い方がいい。小さい方をもらいましょう」とおじいさんは答えて、お礼を言って家に帰りました。
"We have a large chest and a small chest. Which would you like as a gift?" the sparrow asked. "I'm an old man, so the lighter one is better. I'll take the small one," the old man answered, thanked the sparrows, and headed home.
家に着いて行李を開けてみると、中には金や銀、絹の着物などの宝物がぎっしり詰まっていました。おばあさんはその光る宝物を見て、目の色を変えました。「私もすぐに雀の宿へ行く。大きい行李をもらってくる」と叫んで、休む間もなく山へ走っていきました。
When he opened the chest at home, it was packed full of gold, silver, silk kimonos, and other treasures. The old woman's eyes flashed at the sight of the gleaming gifts. "I'm going to the sparrow's inn this minute. I'll bring back the big chest myself!" she cried, and without even pausing for breath she ran off into the mountains.
雀の宿に着いたおばあさんは、もてなしも待たずに「早く大きい行李をくれ」と言いました。雀たちは仕方なく重い行李を渡しました。「家に着くまで、絶対に開けてはいけません」と注意されたのに、おばあさんは我慢できず、山の途中で蓋を開けてしまいました。
When the old woman reached the inn, she barked, "Quick — give me the big chest!" without waiting to be welcomed. Reluctantly, the sparrows handed her the heavy chest. Though they warned her, "You must not open it until you reach home," the old woman could not stand the wait and pried off the lid halfway down the mountain.
すると、中から恐ろしいお化けや蛇がたくさん出てきて、おばあさんは悲鳴を上げながら山を転がるように逃げ帰りました。それからおばあさんは、二度と雀の話をしなくなったそうです。
Out came swarms of terrifying ghouls and snakes, and shrieking at the top of her lungs, she tumbled all the way home in panic. From that day on, the story goes, the old woman never spoke of the sparrow again.
