昔々、優しいおじいさんと意地悪なおばあさんがいました。ある日、おじいさんは怪我をした雀を助けて、大切に育てていました。しかし、おばあさんが作った糊を雀が食べてしまったので、おばあさんは怒って雀の舌を切ってしまいました。雀は泣きながら飛んでいきました。

However, because the sparrow ate some starch paste that the old woman had made, the old woman became angry and cut the sparrow's tongue. The sparrow flew away while crying.
おじいさんは可哀想に思って、雀を探しに行きました。山を歩いていると、雀たちの家を見つけました。舌を切られた雀は元気になっていて、おじいさんを歓迎してくれました。美味しいご飯を食べたり、踊りを見たりして、おじいさんはとても楽しい時間を過ごしました。
The old man felt sorry and went to search for the sparrow. While walking in the mountains, he found the sparrows' house. The sparrow whose tongue had been cut had become well and welcomed the old man. By eating delicious meals and watching dances, the old man had a very enjoyable time.
帰る時、雀は「大きいつづらと、小さいつづらがあります。どちらがいいですか」と聞きました。おじいさんは「小さいほうでいいです」と答えて、それを持って帰りました。家で開けてみると、中には金や銀の宝物がたくさん入っていました。

それを見たおばあさんは、自分も宝物が欲しいと思いました。おばあさんは雀の家に行き、大きいつづらをもらって帰りました。しかし、重いつづらを開けてみると、中から恐ろしいお化けがたくさん出てきました。おばあさんは驚いて逃げ出しました。
