昔々、ある雪の降る冬の日に、お后様が窓辺で針仕事をしていると、針で指を刺してしまい、雪の上に赤い血が三滴落ちました。その美しい色を見たお后様は、「雪のように白く、血のように赤く、黒檀のように黒い髪の子供がほしい」と願いました。
Long ago, on a snowy winter's day, a queen was sewing by the window when she pricked her finger with the needle, and three drops of red blood fell onto the snow. Seeing the beauty of that color, she wished, "I would love to have a child whose skin is as white as snow, whose lips are as red as blood, and whose hair is as black as ebony."
やがて女の子が生まれ、その願いの通りの姿だったので、「白雪姫」と名付けられました。しかし、お后様はその子を産んだ後、間もなく亡くなってしまいました。
Before long, a baby girl was born, and because she looked exactly as the queen had wished, she was named Snow White. But not long after giving birth, the queen passed away.
王様は新しい奥さんを迎えました。新しい女王は美しい人でしたが、心はとても冷たく、自分が世界で一番美しいと信じていました。彼女には、何でも本当のことを答える不思議な鏡がありました。
The king took a new wife. The new queen was beautiful, but her heart was very cold, and she believed she was the most beautiful in all the world. She owned a strange mirror that answered any question with the truth.
毎朝、女王は鏡に「鏡よ、鏡。世界で一番美しいのは誰?」と尋ねていました。ずっと「あなたです、女王様」と答えていた鏡が、ある日「世界で一番美しいのは、白雪姫です」と答えたので、女王は怒りで震え始めました。
Every morning, she asked it, "Mirror, mirror on the wall, who is the fairest of them all?" The mirror had always answered, "You are, my queen." But one day, when it answered, "The fairest in the world is Snow White," the queen began to tremble with rage.
女王は猟師を呼んで、「白雪姫を森へ連れていって、殺してきなさい」と命令しました。しかし、猟師は白雪姫の優しい目を見て、どうしても殺せませんでした。「お姫様、ここから逃げてください。どこか遠くへ行ってください」と言って、彼を逃がしてあげました。
The queen summoned a huntsman and ordered him, "Take Snow White into the forest and kill her." But when the huntsman looked into Snow White's gentle eyes, he could not bring himself to do it. "Princess, run away from here. Go somewhere far, far away," he said, and let her escape.
