昔々、ある夫婦が、隣の家の高い塀の向こうに広がる魔女の庭を見ていました。庭には「ラプンツェル」という美味しい野菜が植えてあり、奥さんはそれを食べたくて仕方がなくなってしまいました。「あれを食べないと、私はもう死にそうです」と妻が言うので、夫はこっそり塀を越えて野菜を盗みました。
Long ago, a husband and wife were gazing across the high wall next door, where a witch's garden lay. In that garden grew a delicious vegetable called rapunzel, and the wife became so desperate to eat it that she said, "If I don't have some, I think I'm going to die." So the husband secretly climbed the wall and stole some.
しかし二回目に盗みに入ったところを、魔女に見つかってしまいました。「生まれてくる赤ちゃんを私にくれるなら、許してあげましょう」と魔女は言い、夫婦は仕方なくその約束をしました。
But on his second visit, the witch caught him in the act. "I'll forgive you, on one condition," she said. "Give me the child your wife is carrying." Having no choice, the couple agreed.
やがて女の子が生まれると、魔女はすぐに赤ちゃんを連れて行き、「ラプンツェル」と名付けました。少女は森の奥にある、ドアも階段もない高い塔の中で育てられました。
In time a baby girl was born, and the witch took her away at once and named her Rapunzel. The girl was raised in a tall tower deep in the forest, a tower with no door and no stairs.
十二歳になった頃、ラプンツェルの金色の髪は、塔の窓から地面まで届くほど長くなっていました。魔女が塔の下から「ラプンツェル、ラプンツェル、髪の毛を下ろしておくれ」と呼ぶと、彼女は窓から長い髪を垂らして、魔女を上に登らせていました。
By the time she was twelve, Rapunzel's golden hair had grown so long it reached from the tower window all the way down to the ground. Whenever the witch called from below, "Rapunzel, Rapunzel, let down your hair," she would lower her long braid out the window so the witch could climb up.
