日本の夏はとても暑いですが、夏にはたくさんのお祭りがあります。七月や八月になると、町や村でお祭りが始まります。夏祭りは、日本の夏でいちばん楽しい行事でしょう。
Summers in Japan are very hot, but the season is also full of festivals. Once July and August arrive, festivals begin in towns and villages across the country. The summer matsuri is probably the most enjoyable event of the Japanese summer.
昔から、お祭りは神社のための行事でした。夏は暑いから、病気になる人が多かったです。それで、神様に元気をお願いするために、人々はお祭りをしました。今もその気持ちは少し残っていると思います。
In the old days, festivals were religious events held at shrines. Because the summer heat made many people fall ill, communities held festivals to pray to the gods for good health. A little of that feeling still remains today.
お祭りに行く前に、多くの人は浴衣を着ます。浴衣は夏の着物で、とても涼しいです。女の人も男の人も子供も浴衣を着て、げたを履きます。きれいな浴衣を着て友達と歩くのは、本当に気持ちがいいです。
Before going to a festival, many people put on a yukata, a light cotton kimono worn in summer. Women, men, and children all wear yukata together with wooden geta sandals. Walking around with friends in a beautiful yukata feels really wonderful.
神社の前の道には、たくさんの屋台があります。焼きそばを食べたり、たこ焼きを食べたり、かき氷を食べたりします。金魚すくいや射的のゲームもあります。子供たちは家族と一緒に、いろいろな店を見て回ります。少し高いですけど、屋台の食べ物はとてもおいしいです。
The streets leading to the shrine are lined with food stalls. People eat yakisoba noodles, takoyaki octopus balls, and shaved ice. There are also games like goldfish scooping and target shooting. Children walk from stall to stall with their families. The stall food is a little pricey, but it tastes wonderful.
お祭りの中で、みこしも人気があります。みこしは小さい神社のような物で、男の人たちが「わっしょい、わっしょい」と言いながら、町を歩きます。大きな音と人の声で、町はにぎやかになります。
The mikoshi, or portable shrine, is another highlight of the festival. A mikoshi looks like a small shrine, and groups of men carry it through the streets while shouting "wasshoi, wasshoi." The loud chants and lively voices fill the town with energy.
そして、夏祭りの最後には、花火大会があります。隅田川の花火大会や大阪の花火大会は、とても有名です。夜の空に大きな花火が上がると、みんな「きれい」と言います。家でテレビで見てもいいですが、やはり外で見るほうがいいでしょう。
At the end of summer, many places hold huge fireworks displays. The fireworks shows on the Sumida River in Tokyo and in Osaka are especially famous. When the great blossoms of light burst across the night sky, everyone says how beautiful they are. Watching at home on TV is fine, but seeing them outside in person is even better.
夏祭りは、日本の文化と人の心がよく分かる行事です。日本に来たら、ぜひ一度行ってみたいですね。
