むかしむかし、中国の花果山という山に、不思議な石から生まれた一匹の猿がいました。この猿は並外れた力を持っていたので、他の猿たちから王として認められ、孫悟空と名乗るようになりました。
Long, long ago, on a mountain in China called Mount Huaguo, there was a monkey born from a mysterious stone. Because this monkey possessed extraordinary strength, he was recognized as king by the other monkeys and came to call himself Sun Wukong.
悟空は不老不死の力を手に入れるために、仙人のもとへ修行に行きました。そこで様々な魔法や、雲に乗って空を飛ぶ術を習いました。しかし、悟空は自分の力に自信を持ちすぎて、天界で暴れ回り、神さまたちを困らせるようになりました。
Wukong went to study under an immortal to gain the power of eternal life. There, he learned various magics and the art of flying through the sky on a cloud. However, Wukong became too confident in his own power and went on a rampage in the celestial realm, troubling the gods.
「自分より強い者はいないに違いない」と自惚れていた悟空の前に、お釈迦様が現れました。お釈迦様は「お前が私の手のひらから飛び出せたら、天界をお前に譲ろう」と言いました。悟空は筋斗雲に乗って世界の果てまで飛んでいきました。
While Wukong was conceitedly thinking, "There must be no one stronger than me," the Buddha appeared. The Buddha said, "If you can jump out of the palm of my hand, I will hand over the celestial realm to you." Wukong rode his Somersault Cloud and flew all the way to the ends of the earth.
悟空は世界の果てを示す五本の柱に名前を書いて戻ってきましたが、実はそれはお釈迦様の五本の指だったのです。結局、悟空は五行山という岩山の下に封じ込められてしまいました。
Wukong returned after writing his name on the five pillars that marked the end of the world, but in reality, those were the five fingers of the Buddha. In the end, Wukong was imprisoned under a rocky mountain called the Five Elements Mountain.
それから五百年後、三蔵法師という立派なお坊さんが通りかかりました。三蔵法師が封印を解いてくれたおかげで、悟空は自由になることができました。悟空はその恩返しとして、三蔵法師の弟子になり、インドへの過酷な旅を手伝うことになったのです。
Five hundred years later, a distinguished monk named Xuanzang happened to pass by. Thanks to Xuanzang breaking the seal, Wukong was able to go free. In return for that kindness, Wukong became Xuanzang's disciple and helped him on his grueling journey to India.
