日本には春、夏、秋、冬という四つの季節があり、それぞれに独特の美しさがあります。日本人は昔から、四季の移り変わりを大切にしてきました。和歌や俳句に季節を表す言葉を入れる習慣があるのも、その表れの一つだと言えるでしょう。
Japan has four seasons — spring, summer, autumn, and winter — and each one has a beauty of its own. The Japanese have long treasured the changing of the seasons. The custom of working a season-word into a waka or a haiku is just one expression of that feeling.
春になると、桜が咲き始めます。三月の終わりから四月にかけて、日本中がピンク色に染まり、公園や川沿いには花見客が集まります。桜の下にシートを広げて、お弁当やお酒を楽しむ花見は、日本人にとって欠かせない春の行事です。
When spring comes, the cherry blossoms begin to bloom. From the end of March into April, the whole country turns pink, and crowds of blossom viewers gather in parks and along riverbanks. Spreading out a sheet under the cherry trees and enjoying a bento and some sake — that is hanami, and it remains an irreplaceable spring event for the Japanese.
春はまた、新しい生活が始まる季節でもあります。学校の入学式や会社の入社式が行われ、新しい制服やスーツに身を包んだ人たちを駅でよく見かけるようになります。桜は、出会いと別れの両方を象徴する花だと言われています。
Spring is also the season when new chapters of life begin. School entrance ceremonies and company welcome ceremonies are held, and you start seeing people at stations in brand-new uniforms and suits. The cherry blossom is said to be a flower that symbolizes both meeting and parting.
夏は暑くてたまらない日が続きますが、楽しいイベントもたくさんあります。各地の神社では夏祭りが開かれ、屋台が並び、夜空には大きな花火が打ち上げられます。浴衣を着て出かけるのも、夏の楽しみの一つです。
In summer, the days can be unbearably hot, but there are still plenty of enjoyable events. Summer festivals are held at shrines all over the country, food stalls line the streets, and large fireworks are launched into the night sky. Heading out wearing a yukata is one of the pleasures of summer.
