むかしむかし、あるところにおじいさんとおばあさんが住んでいました。ある雪の日、おじいさんは罠にかかって苦しんでいる鶴を見つけました。かわいそうに思ったおじいさんは、鶴を助けてやりました。すると鶴は空高く飛んでいきました。
Once upon a time, an old man and an old woman lived in a certain place. One snowy day, the old man found a crane struggling in a trap. Feeling sorry for it, the old man rescued the crane. Then, the crane flew high into the sky.
その夜、美しい娘がおじいさんたちの家にやってきました。「道に迷ってしまったので、一晩泊めていただけないでしょうか」と彼女は言いました。娘はとても働き者で、おじいさんとおばあさんは彼女を本当の娘のように可愛がるようになりました。娘は「私に布を織らせてください。ただし、私が機織りをしている最中は、絶対に中を見ないでほしいのです」と言いました。
That night, a beautiful young woman came to the old man's house. "I've lost my way, so could you please let me stay for the night?" she asked. The girl was a very hard worker, and the old man and woman came to cherish her like their own daughter. The girl said, "Please let me weave some cloth. However, while I am weaving, I want you to absolutely not look inside."
娘が織った布はとても美しく、町で高く売れました。「こんなに美しい布を、どうやって織っているのだろう」とおばあさんは不思議でしかたがありませんでした。とうとう我慢できずに、おばあさんは戸の隙間から部屋の中をのぞいてしまいました。
The cloth the girl wove was very beautiful and sold for a high price in town. "I wonder how she weaves such beautiful cloth," the old woman couldn't help but wonder. Finally unable to wait, the old woman peeked into the room through a crack in the door.
そこには娘の姿はなく、一羽の鶴が自分の羽を抜いて糸に混ぜながら布を織っているところでした。娘の正体は、おじいさんが助けたあの鶴に違いないと二人は気づきました。
There was no sign of the girl, but instead, a crane was weaving cloth by plucking its own feathers and mixing them into the thread. The two realized that the girl's true identity must be the crane that the old man had rescued.
秘密を知られた鶴は、もう人間の姿でいるわけにはいきませんでした。「私はあの時助けていただいた鶴です。ご恩返しに来たのですが、見られたからにはここを去らなければなりません」と言い残し、鶴は空へ帰っていきました。
Having its secret discovered, the crane could no longer remain in human form. "I am the crane you rescued back then. I came to repay your kindness, but now that I have been seen, I must leave this place," the crane said before flying back into the sky.
