ある夏の日のこと、アヒルのお母さんが卵を温めていました。次々と可愛いヒナが生まれましたが、最後の一つの卵からは、体が大きくて灰色の、少し見栄えの悪いヒナが生まれました。
One summer day, a mother duck was warming her eggs. One after another, cute ducklings were born, but from the last egg, a large, gray, and somewhat plain-looking duckling was born.
「この子は他の子に比べてみにくい」と、周りの動物たちはその子をからかいました。みにくいアヒルの子は毎日いじめられるので、悲しくてたまらなくなり、とうとう家を逃げ出してしまいました。

冬がやってくると、アヒルの子にとって厳しい生活が続きました。寒さと飢えのせいで、何度も死にそうになりましたが、親切な人や動物たちに助けられながら、なんとか冷たい冬を乗り越えました。
When winter arrived, a harsh life continued for the duckling. Because of the cold and hunger, he nearly died many times, but with the help of kind people and animals, he somehow managed to survive the cold winter.
春になり、アヒルの子は美しい湖のそばに行きました。そこへ、白くて美しい鳥たちが飛んできました。「あんなに美しい鳥たちに、僕が近づけるはずがない」とアヒルの子は思いました。しかし、鳥たちは彼を温かく迎え入れてくれました。
When spring came, the duckling went to a beautiful lake. There, beautiful white birds came flying by. "There's no way I can get close to such beautiful birds," the duckling thought. However, the birds welcomed him warmly.
ふと水面を見ると、そこに映っていたのはみにくいアヒルではなく、美しい白鳥の姿でした。過酷な冬を乗り越えた結果、彼は立派な白鳥に成長していたのです。新しい仲間たちと一緒に、白鳥は青空へ向かって高く飛び立っていきました。
Suddenly looking at the water's surface, what was reflected there was not an ugly duckling, but the form of a beautiful swan. As a result of overcoming the harsh winter, he had grown into a magnificent swan. Together with his new companions, the swan took flight high into the blue sky.
