むかしむかし、浦島太郎という優しい若者がいました。ある日、太郎が海辺を歩いていると、子供たちにいじめられている亀を見つけました。太郎は亀を助けるために、子供たちにお金をあげて亀を逃がしてやりました。
Once upon a time, there was a kind young man named Urashima Taro. One day, while Taro was walking along the seashore, he found a turtle being bullied by children. To save the turtle, Taro gave the children some money and let the turtle go.
その数日後、太郎が海で釣りをしている最中に、大きな亀が現れました。「助けていただいたお礼に、竜宮城へご案内します」と亀は言いました。太郎が亀の背中に乗ると、海の中の美しいお城に着きました。そこでは美しい乙姫様が太郎を歓迎してくれました。
A few days later, while Taro was fishing at sea, a large turtle appeared. "To thank you for saving me, I will guide you to the Dragon Palace," the turtle said. When Taro climbed onto the turtle's back, they arrived at a beautiful castle under the sea. There, the beautiful Princess Otohime welcomed Taro.
竜宮城での生活は夢のように楽しく、太郎は毎日ごちそうを食べたり、魚たちの踊りを見たりしました。しかし、数日が過ぎたころ、太郎は自分の村や家族が心配になり始めました。「そろそろ家に帰るべきだ」と考えた太郎は、乙姫様に帰ることを伝えました。
Life at the Dragon Palace was as fun as a dream, and Taro spent every day eating feasts and watching the fish dance. However, after a few days had passed, Taro began to worry about his village and family. Thinking, "It's about time I go home," Taro told Princess Otohime that he was leaving.
乙姫様は悲しそうにしながら、「これを開けてはいけないという約束で、玉手箱を持って行ってください」と言って、美しい箱を渡しました。太郎は村へ帰りましたが、村の様子はすっかり変わっていました。自分の家だけでなく、知っている人も誰もいないわけです。竜宮城で過ごした何日かの間に、地上では何百年も経っていたのです。
Princess Otohime looked sad and handed him a beautiful box, saying, "Please take this jewelry box with you on the condition that you never open it." Taro returned to his village, but its appearance had completely changed. Not only was his house gone, but there was no one he knew. In the few days he had spent at the Dragon Palace, hundreds of years had passed on earth.
悲しみと混乱のあまり、太郎は約束を忘れて玉手箱を開けてしまいました。すると、中から白い煙が出てきて、太郎はあっという間におじいさんになってしまいました。
In his grief and confusion, Taro forgot his promise and opened the jewelry box. Then, white smoke came out from within, and in an instant, Taro turned into an old man.
