むかしむかし、大きな森に、足の速いうさぎと、足の遅いかめが住んでいました。うさぎは自信がたくさんあって、「森の中で、私がいちばん速い。かめより、犬より、馬より速いよ」と、いつも自慢していました。
Long, long ago, in a big forest, there lived a fast hare and a slow tortoise. The hare had a lot of confidence and was always bragging, "In this forest, I am the fastest. I'm faster than dogs, faster than horses, faster than the tortoise."
ある日、うさぎはかめに会って、また笑いました。「君は本当に遅いね。そんな短い足で歩くのは大変でしょう。」かめは怒らないで、静かに答えました。「うさぎさん、私と競争しませんか。あの山の上の大きな木まで、走りましょう。」
One day, the hare met the tortoise and laughed at him again. "You are really slow. It must be hard to walk on such short legs." The tortoise did not get angry and quietly answered, "Mr. Hare, won't you race with me? Let's run to the big tree on top of that mountain."
うさぎはびっくりして、それから大きな声で笑いました。「いいよ。でも、君が負けるよ。」森のほかの動物たちも集まって来ました。みんな「面白い競争を見に来た」と言いました。
The hare was surprised, and then laughed loudly. "Sure. But you are going to lose." The other animals of the forest gathered around too. They all said, "We came to watch an interesting race."
「よーい、どん！」きつねが大きな声で言いました。うさぎはすぐに走って行って、見えなくなりました。かめはゆっくり、ゆっくり、一歩ずつ歩きました。「急がないで、休まないで、最後まで歩きたい」と思いました。
"Ready, set, go!" the fox called out loudly. The hare dashed off and disappeared in an instant. The tortoise walked slowly, slowly, one step at a time. He thought, "I will not hurry, I will not rest, and I want to walk all the way to the end."
うさぎは山の半分まで来た後に、後ろを見ました。かめは小さく、小さく見えました。「かめはまだあんなに遅い。少しだけ寝ても、勝つことができるでしょう」と思って、木の下で寝てしまいました。
After the hare reached the middle of the mountain, he looked back. The tortoise looked small, very small. He thought, "The tortoise is still that slow. Even if I sleep just a little, I will be able to win," and he fell asleep under a tree.
かめは止まらないで、ずっと歩き続けました。寝ているうさぎの横を通る前に、ちょっと見ましたが、起こさないで、静かに歩いて行きました。一歩、また一歩、山の上に近づきました。
The tortoise did not stop and kept walking the whole time. Before passing beside the sleeping hare, he glanced at him for a moment, but he did not wake him and walked on quietly. One step, then another step, he got closer to the top of the mountain.
うさぎが起きた時、空はもう赤くなっていました。「大変だ！」とうさぎは叫んで、山の上へ走って行きました。けれど、もう遅かったです。木の下には、笑っているかめがいました。うさぎはとても悲しくて、何も言うことができませんでした。
When the hare woke up, the sky had already turned red. "Oh no!" the hare shouted, and ran toward the top of the mountain. But it was too late. Under the tree stood the tortoise, smiling. The hare was very sad and could not say a word.
その日から、うさぎはもう自慢しませんでした。速い足より、休まない心がいちばん大切だと分かったからです。
From that day on, the hare did not brag anymore. He had learned that a heart that does not rest is more important than fast legs.
