Meaning

A conjunction that expresses contrast. It is used when the content of the first and second clauses is in opposition, or when presenting an exception or opposite fact following the first clause.

Note

Similar to 'but' or 'however' in English. It is more formal than 'けど' and is frequently used in both written and polite spoken Japanese.

Examples

美味しいですが、高いです。

It's delicious, but expensive.

雨ですが、行きます。

It's raining, but I'm going.

彼は学生だが、よく勉強する。

He is a student, but he studies hard.

食べたいが、お腹がいっぱいだ。

I want to eat, but I'm full.

行きたいのですが、用事があって行けません。

I want to go, but I have things to do and can't go.

薬を飲みましたが、熱が下がりません。

I took the medicine, but the fever won't go down.
