Meaning
Indicates that as one thing changes, another thing also changes accordingly, or that an action is performed following a certain rule or order.
Note
Has two main uses: 1) Proportionate change (as A changes, B changes), often with verbs of change. 2) Following a rule, order, or plan (according to A). It is a formal/stiff expression.
Examples
台風が近づくにしたがって、風が強くなってきた。
As the typhoon approached, the wind became stronger.
車のスピードが上がるにしたがって、事故の危険性も高まる。
As the car's speed increases, the risk of an accident also rises.
時間が経つにしたがって、悲しみが和らいでいった。
As time passed, the sadness gradually faded.
JLPTのレベルが上がるに従って、漢字の勉強が難しくなる。
As the JLPT level goes up, studying kanji becomes more difficult.
時代が変化するにしたがい、人々の考え方も変わってきた。
