Meaning
Used to express that even though one wants or tries to do something, they are unable to do so due to some reason or obstacle.
Note
Often used in the form `[Volitional] ni mo [Potential-nai]` (e.g., 'iko-ni-mo ikenai'). It emphasizes that the inability is particularly frustrating or due to an external obstacle.
Examples
行こうにも行けない事情があるんです。
I have circumstances that make it impossible to go even if I wanted to.
連絡しようにも連絡先がわからない。
Even though I want to contact them, I don't know their contact information.
食べようにも、お腹がいっぱいで一口も食べられない。
Even though I try to eat, I'm so full I can't eat a single bite.
買おうにも、財布を忘れてしまって買えない。
Even though I want to buy it, I forgot my wallet so I can't.
寝ようにも、外がうるさくて全く寝られない。
Even though I try to sleep, it's so noisy outside I can't sleep at all.
言おうにも、恥ずかしくてなかなか言い出せない。
Even though I want to say it, I'm too embarrassed to easily speak out.
