ご覧になる

ごらんになる
Alternative writings: 御覧になる
JLPT:N3
Frequency:

1The honorific (sonkeigo) counterpart of 見る — used when a customer or someone senior looks at, reads, or watches something. It describes the other person's action and is never used for your own; for that, the humble 拝見する applies. When making a request, the shorter ご覧ください is more idiomatic than ご覧になってください, and is the form used on signage and in announcements.

2Attached to a verb's -te form, 〜てご覧になる serves as the honorific counterpart of 〜てみる (to try doing something), describing a superior or customer giving something a try. In practice speakers often reach for お試しになる or plain 〜てみてください instead, and stacking two honorifics (お使いになってご覧になる) produces awkward 二重敬語, which is best avoided. Note that the casual 〜てごらん comes from the same ご覧 but is a friendly command aimed downward, not honorific language.
