日本の春といえば、やっぱり桜です。三月の終わりから四月の初めまで、日本のいろいろな町で桜が咲きます。桜の花はとてもきれいですが、一週間か十日だけしか咲きません。だから、日本人は毎年この短い季節をとても大切にします。
When you think of spring in Japan, cherry blossoms come to mind. From the end of March through the beginning of April, sakura bloom across towns all over the country. The flowers are beautiful, but they only last about a week or ten days. That is why Japanese people treasure this short season every year.
桜を見ながらお弁当を食べたり、お酒を飲んだりすることを「花見」と言います。花見の歴史はとても古くて、千年以上前から続いていると言われています。昔は貴族だけの遊びでしたが、今は誰でも気軽に楽しめる行事になりました。
Eating boxed lunches and drinking sake while looking at the cherry blossoms is called hanami. The custom is very old and is said to have continued for more than a thousand years. Long ago it was a pastime for the aristocracy, but today it has become an event that anyone can enjoy casually.
花見の場所は、公園や川のそばが多いです。東京では上野公園が有名で、毎年たくさんの人が集まります。いい場所を取りたい人は、朝早くから来て、シートを広げて待ちます。家族や友達と一緒に、桜の木の下でゆっくり話したり、写真を撮ったりします。
Most hanami spots are in parks or along rivers. In Tokyo, Ueno Park is famous, and huge crowds gather there every year. People who want a good spot arrive early in the morning, spread out a tarp, and wait. With family and friends, they sit under the cherry trees, chat slowly, and take photos.
桜は日本人にとって、ただきれいな花ではありません。新しい学校や新しい仕事も、ちょうど四月から始まります。だから、桜を見ると、新しい生活を思い出す人が多いでしょう。桜の花が散る時、少し悲しい気持ちになる人もいます。
For Japanese people, cherry blossoms are not just pretty flowers. New schools and new jobs also begin in April, right at this same time. That is probably why so many people remember the start of a new life when they see the blossoms. Some even feel a little sad as the petals begin to fall.
最近は、写真を撮ってインターネットに上げる人がとても増えました。外国から花見に来る人も、前より多くなりました。夜にライトをつけて、夜の桜を楽しむ場所もあります。昼の桜より、夜の桜のほうがロマンチックだと思う人もいます。
Recently, more and more people take photos and post them online. There are also far more visitors from abroad coming for hanami than before. In some places, lights are turned on at night so people can enjoy the blossoms after dark. Some say nighttime cherry blossoms are more romantic than daytime ones.
短い春の中で、桜は私たちに「時間は止まらない」と教えてくれます。来年もまた、同じ場所で桜を見たいと思う気持ちが、花見のいちばん大切な意味かもしれません。
In the short days of spring, the cherry blossoms remind us that time does not stand still. Perhaps the deepest meaning of hanami is the wish to see the same blossoms, in the same place, again next year.
