Counting Hundreds, Thousands & Ten Thousands
English groups numbers by thousands (1,000 → 1M → 1B), but Japanese groups by ten-thousands (万 → 億 → 兆). This is one of the biggest differences when working with numbers.
Note: 100 (ひゃく) and 1,000 (せん) drop the いち prefix, but 10,000 keeps it (いちまん). You may hear いっせん in larger compounds like 一千万 (いっせんまん) for clarity, but on its own 1,000 is just せん.
